Hi im looking at replacing the original westy wooden roof lining due to it peeling / de laminating , does anyone sell cut out wooden lining panels or is it take down draw round , cut out and sand to make fit :? or is there any other roof lining kits outthere to fit into a westy , i know it aint original  thinking doing checkered ceiling to match the floor , when i get round to fitting it

Funny i was just thinking about this myself. Can anyone who has removed this from their van got any tips. Dose it just pop out? Would you ever get it back if you needed to? etc etc.
Mines de laminating around the front near the sun visor and around the pop top hatch which is a pain, but was going to leave it as long as possible. Is it just held in by the pressure of the wood pushing on the brackets?
Can someone post picccys on how there interiour (cab) light is fitted as mine looks wrong. Cheers

Can I ditto that as well, mine is badly splitting up at the front and centre, needs doing one day

Its held in by the pressure of it curving and fitting into the channels. I don't think even the 'I' section pieces that bow across the roof are fixed either. They are just bent to the shape of the roof.

I have just done this job on my 69 Poptop Wessty and learnt along the way. I origionally got some 3mm standard ply board but it was not flexible enough to put in and snapped two sheets trying. I ended up buying 3mm flexible plyboard cross grain which was perfect for the job. You will need 2 x 8' x 4' sheets. The only peices of the origional roof I had was the front section so had to cut a measure the rear without a template. All I have left to do is the rear hinge cover which will involve staming it to the right radius but as I dont have the origional bit I'm unsure as to how it fits to the roof.

I just did the tailgate hinge cover from scratch. OG westy ones have small brackets at the sides and another small bracket at the top. Be prepared for lots of filing to get the shape right. Get the radius from the top of the wardrobe where the curved cut is.

I made this with 1.5mm thick ply, with an extra layer of 1.5mm ply with the grain running the other way just on the areas which need to stay flat.

DP on here has pictures of an OG westy one removed from his bus which was well useful for me.

Cheers dude that link with the rear cover pictures has helped no end all my brackets are still there just need to get the flexible ply to fit.

Hi,

Did my Crossover Westy with 4mm exterior grade Baltic Birch ply (couldn't get hold of 3mm) and then applied 2 coats of clear exterior varnish. Had to stretch the location channels a bit but managed to get them in. I used all the old parts as templates. :D

I also have seen that someone selling kits on the samba.com, quite pricey though

Sorry to jump in !!!
If you look around for a good timber supplier you can but 5 x 5 sheets (I paid around £20/each), the width to follow the curve of the roof is greater than 1200mm which is the normal width of a sheet of ply and to get the grain going the right way with standard ply you end up bending across the grain, hence the splitting. Birch ply is the better also. GOOD LUCK I bought a forest before I got it right, and its still not perfect

yeah I got 5'x5' sheets of 1.5mm thick Birch ply to do my headlining, about £28 a sheet. 2 coats of satin yacht varnish to both sides. jobs a good 'un :)

Up for this one as I have a quick question about the location strips to hold the ply in place, don't have these and all i have found to date is homelux type strips you would use for tiling etc. anyone shed any light on a supplier length needs to be at least 2.8m from a measure but suppose could use sections

Cheers all.....

Steve rules!

Agreed looks cracking just wonder where to source brackets trim strip holders for the edges and joints?

Here you go

Perimeter trims -
http://www.goodingalum.com/product-info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... el_Fix.pdf
product code GA WP1. This comes in 2500mm lengths.

'I' sections between ply sheets -
http://www.goodingalum.com/product-info" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... ofiles.pdf
product code GA W01. Its on the 2nd page down of the pdf. This comes in 4000mm lengths so is enough to do the two pieces you'll need.

Not cheap when you add delivery, but unless you are lucky enough to find original ones then these are your only option. I spent ages trying to find these trims and they are the closest I've seen to the OG ones. You'll have fun bending the 'I' section pieces to the curve of the roof too ;)

Here's the link to the original build thread for my interior too if its any help

I was lucky enough to find a full set of 2 roof bows (the I section ) and the 4 longer side channels ( the J section ) along with the Westy tin top ply all at the same show , Slammedkustom also found the curved piece of ply to cover tailgate hinge at same show so i bought that off him,now have the full set .

Ego spotted the metal work for me and it was just what i was after for my Panel Van ,
I am now in the process of making templates from all four pieces in paper and they are available to buy from me , I will be making Pop Top / Sunroof template soon too ,

Check my thread in General ( I think )

extra pair of hands taking out and putting in help - managed to get an old one back in mine (just as well as i bought 3mm ply as mentioned and cracked it all putting it in). Hat of to anyone sucessful in this mission- it is a pain in the arse but results once in are great.

There was a thread some time ago on this site re someone who got the metal work fabricated and galvanised as per original, may be worth checking out as i think he had the contact of who made it up.

Ben ;)
