Just wondering if any oneknew what the wood grain is on an early westy, My dad seems to think its cherry, but I'm sure i read somewhere that it was something else.

Thanks

AFAIK its Quartersawn limba veneer.

i'd actually never heard of 'Limba' but its an african hardwood from Zaire and surrounding areas.

I want you on my team for the next pub quiz!!

I'm not wanting to piss on anyones bonfire here, but that wood looks nothing like what I have in my van, could it be that a bay is different to a splitty?

thats very early split westy there thats being sold. But the westfalia did use Limba on all real wood cabinets.

the limba has a very dark heartwood so you get very dark brown and greys mixed in with the much lighter colour so loads of variation. Apparently they used Limba on all of the real wood cabinets right up until the 80s? and baltic birch for the larger panelling as limba is too expensive now.

heres a good thread on the samba about it. some really nice variations on the grain.
