i have a early 1972 panel it requires engine an box question is will a beetle engine an box fit ? or does it have to be a camper box ?

depends on the box, new nose cone and mounting kit aint gonna come all that cheap.....and what your wanting from the box i.e. final drive for motorway miles as in the 1303s and the likes...engine wise youll need an adaptor plate to hang the engine from the rear bar.

so a camper van gearbox is needed really ? also is there any differance in a 1600 beetle engine to a camper engine ?

The engine is supported between the gearbox and the engine bar hence the adaptor plate , you can get away with a Camper engine, universal case or bug engine with adaptor otherwise they pretty much the same 1600 TP, but you have the 72 so you could go for the T4 lump, which for a 72 strictly would be a 1700 pancake motor.

I take it theres nowt in the back at all then?

no nothin it's my first bay to as i have only had splits before an even then only ever took engine out an re-built an put back in.so i need a camper box but a beetle or camper engine will butt up together ok ? sorry to be a pain but i need to know so i know what to buy.

you can use the kit supplied by Tim 'Monkeyspinner' at roadhouseretro.com and fit an AT code box from a 1303s for better motorway cruising speeds.

you need to register to see the product on the forum so il post it here....

The early bay gearboxes are known for there low gear ratios even with standard profile tyres, as soon as they are lowered with lower profile tyres cruising at more than 50mph becomes almost impossible. one option is the fit 2L Bay gearbox but they are hard to find and very expensive! However there is an alternative, this kit which is exclusive to RoadHouse Retro Co allows a Type 1 IRS box to be fitted straight in with no modifications needed to the bus it's self. you then have the choice of three ratiod gearboxes depending on the engine size you have. the 1303S box being the highest ratios so best for motorway cruising. the kits consists of all the parts needed to bolt the box in, it includes: Front mount adapter cradle, 2x brand new drive shafts, a new extended clutch cable, bowden tube extension, gear selector shaft extension and fittings. The kit is made in America to the highest quality and is priced at £295 plus delivery.
