lock barrels..

my drivers door lock barrel is jaffed! and rather than have a separate key for that when i replace it, does any body know where i can get a complete set of new good quality remake handles/locks for every door (2 cab, sliding and tailgate). or a set of new barrels for every door (prefered for cheapness as my handles are in good condition)

try custom and commercial , the barrell comes out of the handles quite easy or if you go to a good locksmith with an old handle he could make your key fit is so they are all the same.

To keep it cheap - get hold of some old knakered handles for a few quid from autojumble and remove barrels and re jig the tumblers using the link suggested by Aaron - its pretty easy, just a little time consuming due to trial and error of matching tumblers to your key

FS 8)

As the guys above said, rebuild them yourself and much cheaper, remember that you want the door locks to match to the ignition key if possible as that is more problematic to change/modify.

I bought 8xbeetle handles with barrels off ebay for £6 and used the tumblers out of them - barrels are different size and wont fit your handles but with some minor adjustment with a dremel the tumblers fitted in my barrels fine.
Also make sure your keys are in good condition otherwise it may make the tumbler selection a bit harder.

Did you dremel the door handle or barrel? is my ignition key supposed to fit the barrels? i have a separate key for the ignition and one for doors

They shoul be the same key but over the years the barrels get swapped out...you can rework the brass tumblers to fit the key but you want a qaulity key to use as a master....

the barrel should be removable on all your door handles inc sliding door and the rear and engine latches. as per the link to the barrel rebuilding page above when the barrel is removed lots of thin bits of metal wil come out of the slots these are the tumblers, there are four kinds if i remember correctly, identified by the number of notches on them and the location of the key slot through the middle. The beetle tumblers are slightly taller than the bay ones so need a little bit removing from the bottom to make them the right length (thats what I dremelled off).

If the ignition switch is an original one then the key would have fitted all the doors as well, if its a later replacement then the key will probably be be a different pattern and you wont be able to use one key to do ignition & doors.

have a look here for more info:

Once you sit down and start to take one to bits it all becomes a lot clearer.
I had a different key for each lock before I started, now one key does everything(bar fuel cap).

i have a haynes manual that will help with taking the locks out mine probably has a new ignition then.. well it most definitely has as i have a button start... do the original ignitions use the 'R' key
