could be a few reasons, but i know some of the cheaper aftermarket heads have a tendency of the valve seats sinking into the head, making the valve clearance tight.

Just a heads up. Went into debenhams today and they have little dinky toy size early bays for £2.25 in a sale. These look to be very accurate apparat from the cheesy surfboards on the roof rack but I guess you could remove these. I bought a couple ;)
