well fumes go out of the bottom one and fresh air goes in the top one,simple as that,ofcourse if fumes are coming out of top one(you will get a slight bit)then its time for new pistons ect.the top pipe is only conected to the air filter so that it gets a supply of clean,filtered air .so just stick a bit of pipe on it and put one of thouse cheap small filters on it.no fumes from your engine 8)

This is starting to get a bit confusing.
The stock filler would normally have one metal pipe that runs down through the tinware which has a rubber "beak" on the end, under the tinware, and one short metal stub pipe next to the filler cap pointing upwards and to the right. Its this short stub that normally has a rubber pipe fitted to it which goes to the air cleaner. Its item number 37 on page 2 in this illustration on the heritage site http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_parts_Oil-System_act_page.render_pageID_272_lang_EN_country_GB.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If your filler/breather is different then its not stock. If it only has the metal pipe going downwards and no stub you wont have anything to attach the rubber pipe to.
On this picture you can see the rubber pipe connecting the breather to the top of the air cleaner on the right hand carb.

Engine breather to twin 34's via breather box.
hi guys n gals.
looking at trikky's pic my oil filler cap is the same and has that little metal pipe effort going down(exits through bottom tinware if your with me).
so is it safe to say i need to put a pipe off that and connect it to my right hand airfilter?
does it need to go to both?what is the benefit of putting it on,what size dia is the pipe off hand?

I'm going to replicate this setup as I have just installed twin DRLA 40s on my 1776cc engine. I have the original oil filler with the breather hose on which I believe is 12mm ID. I am not sure what to search for to find a suitable attachment for the hose to attach to the RH carb? Any ideas please?
Hi bud, if you get on to Euro Carb, you can buy air filters with a knock out plug underneath to attach your crankcase breather and one will be enough. Ive recently done mine. You can see some before and after pictures in my gallery thread 'Sherbie'.

Thanks mate. I've looked on euro carb and cant see any filters or bases that are listed as having knock out plugs. Plus I already have air filters that I would rather modify if at all possible. I just need to find the correct adapter for the hose. I'm thinking maybe this would work? 1/2 NPT to 12mm 13mm (1/2) BLACK 90 DEGREE ELBOW PUSH ON BARB TAIL Hose Adapter? Drill out the top of the filter in the centre and use rubber washers either side of adaptor?
Yeah, see what you mean.I went the easy route as I needed new filters anyhow as I hadn’t replaced them for a while. The knockout bit underneath was in the rubber section of the filter base and came with a plastic barbed right angle bend the same O.D. As the oil filler neck spigot thing.
If your filters are new you could possibly sell em.
I’d been prattling about tooing and froeing for a couple of years then one night, I came in from the pub after a few, and the iPad mysteriously went on to Euro Carb,,, and the rest is history. Plonked them in the garage with all the other parts that I’m gonna fit or change one day then I promptly forget about them, until I needed to clear some space on my bench. So I fitted them, must’ve took at least five minutes. Then re did it and took another five minutes.
