I'm in conversation with someone in a VW FB group about buying a part.
I don't know the seller personally.
If I send the money with PayPal am I protected and not going to lose my money if it's a scam?

He'll probably want to you pay Friends & Family, this way he won't incur extra charges, however you won't be protected in this case
 
In the past I’ve paid the extra to cover charges if I wasn’t sure. Also maybe link your PayPal to a credit card rather than a current account for extra protection.
 
Linked my Amex account to my PayPal acc, works like a charm.
Can use it on ebay still as they cut ties with Ebay because of charges.
