    The Blue '71 makeover

Well, after a while I have finally made some progress. When we had the heat wave the other week I decided to sand down and basecoat the engine bay Tonight I finally had a couple of hours to progress the engine. Forget to take pics at the start, got the cylinders and head fitted loosely on...

    The Blue '71 makeover

Well I bit the bullet and bought a new set of studs, and they turned up today. Good service from VWHeritage as usual. Now I can crack on with the engine build and hopefully not have any more setbacks.

    The Blue '71 makeover

Quick update for you all. I cleaned up the crankcase and gearbox, refreshed them with a quick dusting of paint. Had problems assembling the short block, due to the bearings not fitting in the dowels. Cost me £40, but lesson learnt. Currently having trouble finding new 10mm studs...

    10mm head studs, where from?

Just been investigating this some more and found that VW switched to 8mm on later engines to stop the block expansion ripping the 10mm stud out of the thread. To get around this, there are case savers available to reduce the thread in block to 8mm.

    10mm head studs, where from?

Ok thanks, I'll keep you in mind. I am going to clean the old ones tomorrow and check them over. If they are still true then I may as well use them.

    10mm head studs, where from?

I'm currently fighting an uphill battle rebuilding my 1600 twin port. The latest hold up is getting some 10mm head studs. I picked up a kit for a '71 bus and found they didn't fit the crankcase. When I checked them against the original ones the new ones are smaller in diameter. I guess the ones...

stupid question time ( compression test)

I think a drill would struggle to turn over the engine well enough to perform a test. That's one of the reasons the starter motor engages the edge of the flywheel, you have 100mm+ leaverage on the crank.

    piston cleaning

Mine were caked, so needed a wire brush and then a nylon 'brillo' type pad. I found JIZER very good for cleaning, and fairly cheap as well. From this To this

To those who fitted the fuel cut off solenoid....

    Here's the thread saying it's the 2 opposite each other. http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=18494&hilit=solenoid&start=20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

To those who fitted the fuel cut off solenoid....

Spend the last few days reading up about this as I am going to get a solenoid. I remember someone posting up the the solenoid was marked wrong, as that you needed to use the 2 spade connectors next to each other, and not the one on it's own marked earth. I haven't seen one of these solenoids to...

    Removing a stud

I can't tell 100% from the picture but isn't that stud part of the engine case? If it is you'll struggle to remove it using a stud extracter with the amount of thread showing and the lack of space available. What are you replacing the stud with? As over time you may develop a leak between the 2...

Which supplier? and a quick Q about heat exchanger pipes.

I'm going to try cool air for a locking fuel cap. I couldn't find any codes for a discount the night I put the order in, wish I waited for you guys as I could have saved myself £60  Well VWHeritage pipped Machine7 to the post, by delivering this little bundle today. Machine 7 order...

Which supplier? and a quick Q about heat exchanger pipes.

After printing out my shopping lists, I have come to the same conclusion. So the order is being split between machine7 and Heritage. Quick question though, should I go for card or plastic heat exchanger air pipes. The plastic should last longer, but the corrigation on the card looks less...

Which supplier? and a quick Q about heat exchanger pipes.

Hi there, I'm after your opinions/experiance of some suppliers. I have a fairly large order to buy, including Top end rebuilt kit, backbox, gear link bush kit. I've gone to Just Kampers, Machine 7 & VWHeritage and they all have the majority of parts I want. I'm swaying towards VWHeritage as...

    The Blue '71 makeover

Not too much news, been cleaning bits today, before stopping to watch the rugby. Block and Pistons came up ok Then the bad news began, the top of this piston is damaged, not sure if it was dropped or the result of valve contact. One of the heads has a crack from the sparkplug hole all...
