    Gearbox rebuilders in 2022

Hi all. i have been looking for someone to do a rebuild on my CA 046 gearbox on my '69 bay. Looking through old threads on here it seems that Cogbox is no longer trading. I'm not sure if Bears are still trading or not. I left a message via their 'Contact us' page on the website with no reply...

Engine on 79 T2 seems to have seized

To be fair, that is only a 'common issue' if it had a sloppy rebuild. Those pins should be a slight push fit with no play into the crank case. If there is any play in the pin it can do exactly what you have found on yours.

    Engine question…

I was also thinking about driveshafts! A friend of mine had a T25 with symptoms like you described and spent ages playing with distributors and carbs only to find that it was a CV joint siezing up!

    Monty the Red Campervan

It was more 'normal' back in the 50's 60's to have a square number plate on the back of vehicles. Particularly with the old black and white 'historic' plates. I have a square plate on the back of my bus, I think it looks more in proportion with the engine lid shape than a long plate. It also...

complete set of bay exploded drawings... (rezvan)

Just tried to open the link but it no longer exists. Any idea where it can be found now? Cheers! Update! Sorry! It's me not copying the link properly! I left the " at the end of the html! Doh!

    Front quarter light catches.

Thanks for the reply, I have confirmed that they are the same part! I bought a new one from Heritage today and fitted it. It seems a bit weird that Heritage doesn't advertise it as being suitable for a T2 quarter light, only for a beetle!

    Front quarter light catches.

Does anybody know if the front quarter light catches are the same as the Beetle ones? The part numbers are almost the same, i.e. the T2 part number is 311-837-658/A/ for a right hand catch and the beetle part number is 111-837-658/A/ for a right hand one. Looking on suppliers sites, the catches...

    Van won't start !!

You didn't mention if you changed the points in the dizzy. I had this problem years ago with mine and it turned out the points had worn out on the heel that runs on the cam in the dizzy. I did what you did and checked the timing but it was the dwell period that was off. Other than that , did...

How long have you owned your current bus?

Well here goes! I bought my bus February 1983! Still driving but not as a daily. Not bad after 39 years of ownership! :)

    Running very hot

I would also check that your vacuum capsule isn't leaking. You have to disconnect the hose from the carb and give it a good suck! If you do this with the dizzy cap off you should see the advance plate move with the points. If it don't move then the capsule is leaking making the engine run...

You could but it isn't necessary. :)

    Danbury Headlining

Hi All. Can anyone tell me how the factory fitted headlining is fitted to the cab area of an early bay, (Kombi)? I want to re-glue the Danbury fitted living area headlining but it needs to be glued to the roof support that is under the factory fitted lining. (See pic). I am trying not to...

    Brake fluid leak

Good advise about checking the new cylinder. I had three badly machined cylinders when I replaced the whole braking system and had to get them exchanged before fitting. Definitely strip the new ones and clean them out. They usually have metal particles inside that wreck the seals, unless you...

    Front beam advice

There's no need to move the steering damper mount. The only thing you have to do is change the steering idler for a RHD one.

    Clutch Noise

Unfortunately, looking at the photo of the gearbox, there are no tapped holes to bolt the guide sleeve to. You will have to buy the correct clutch for the gearbox. Also, make sure you get the correct clutch release shaft as the early and late gearboxes are different as the release bearings are...

    Clutch Noise

I agree! You should have the earlier clutch with the three-lever pressure plate. If you fit the later clutch it needs the guide sleeve that is bolted to the bell housing around the input shaft to guide the release bearing.

    indicator/ electrical problem.

I can only give you a possible reason as I had the same symptoms on my bus when I got it. I had to remove the indicator switch and give it a really good clean out as the problem was lots of tiny 'filings' shorting out the contacts on the switch. It is just the result of years of wear of the...

Juddering when releasing the clutch up and down the gears!!?

Firstly, check all the engine and gearbox mounts. Also check there isn't an oil leak on the flywheel. This will be apparent by there being drops of oil leaking out of the bottom of the join between engine and gearbox. If there is a big leak it can contaminate the clutch friction plate and cause...

Rear of van has oil haze

Did you also replace the 'O' ring in the flywheel? This is often missed and is a common cause of oil leaks on the flywheel.
