I posted this yesterday in someone elses thread, I guess it got lost and not many people noticed it or it was ignored :?

I'm pulling my engine this weekend. I have no clutch pressure so it is either the clutch or release bearing/release bearing clips at play here.

This is the noise you get;

definately does not sound like clutch release bearing to me,changed mine earlier and my noise was more like a whirr/humm not clunky like yours :?

Could be that the thrust bearing has turned (broken clips) and forks are hitting clutch cover splines??

Well done that man

Looked a right mess, I had a new release bearing and clips on standby but need a new shift fork for the gearbox. The clutch and pressure plate are okay.

looks to me like the wrong clutch for the gear box ,could be why it broke.

I agree!

You should have the earlier clutch with the three-lever pressure plate. If you fit the later clutch it needs the guide sleeve that is bolted to the bell housing around the input shaft to guide the release bearing.

Makes sense. So either fit the sleeve to the bellhousing or just get the correct clutch/pressure plate?

Unfortunately, looking at the photo of the gearbox, there are no tapped holes to bolt the guide sleeve to. You will have to buy the correct clutch for the gearbox. Also, make sure you get the correct clutch release shaft as the early and late gearboxes are different as the release bearings are different. You seem to have the early gearbox. (No guide sleeve tappings)

Or get a later bell housing for your gearbox so you can fit a later clutch. I might have the very thing if you decide to go down that route.

Cheers Steve,

I think I'll stick with the current setup but get a new clutch/pressure plate, I'd rather stick to having everything early. Do you know if the clutch/plate from Heritage (link above) will be adequate enough with my 1914cc?

From the restraining clips lying oin the bell housing it looks like the wrong thrust bearing may have been used. You can use the later clutch plate with the older thrust bearing by using an adaptor which fixes onto the clutch. It is very easy to fit as it just winds onto the sprung teeth and provides a thrut surface just like the older clutch. I used one of these when I put a later engine in my 1969 and it works fine.

Laurie Pettitt tells me the early clutch is ok for 1776, but won't be man enough for my 1955... Bigger the better I believe rather than getting an uprated clutch and a sore leg. :lol:

I have a knackered later 1600 gear box. It has a bell housing complete with the release bearing guide, clutch operating arm etc etc. It needs a new shaft seal is all and you'd need a gasket to fit it. It doesn't have the clutch release bearing but that would come with a clutch kit. Swapsies for the cards if you like?

It's there if you want it anyway. :)
