    Whats my engine ?

Solid information & advice right there! Obviously that engine builder is not familiar with VW aircooled engines ... so you'll be taking your chances if you hire him for the rebuild. Just because the engine may have originally been a 1600, many of these engines have been rebuilt and bored out so...

    1968-71 engine front tin

Like in 67 Bay's link and Trikky2 suggested ... I welded an adapter plate on a Beetle tin. Not OEM but works well.

Your Early Bay Picture of the Day .....

Nice picture! I want to try it ... but me thinks I won't get the same effect with my panel van

    Clutch assembly query.

Unfortunately you need to drop the engine to find out what goodies are inside. Our buses are over 40 years old and I'd guess that most have had at least one clutch job in the past. Open, clean, inspect, learn about the different clutches, order, install, close, drive on!

    Oil Change

I found that doing a dry run to find the sweet spot to angle the bottle just right so I could hand squeeze "pump" the oil in worked way faster than fitting a hose on the end (think the reverse of sucking a thick milkshake/malt through a straw - sigh). Fill it up until you can feel the oil level...

    This might help :) http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=429434&start=0" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

    Canadian canoe paint

Be careful what you assume. Just like metals differ so do plastics ... maybe even more because they are all 100% unnatural and man-made! Maybe this chart will help (sorry I couldn't find an image of this chart which actually includes kayaks & canoes) Your canoe is most likely HPDE...

    Canadian canoe paint

Thejinx mentioned his boat is plastic. Nothing but the same polyethylene plastic will bond to the hull. It would be like trying to MIG weld aluminum with steel wire because the chemical properties are not compatible.

    Canadian canoe paint

No I didn't get a canoe stolen. I had never heard of those canoes referred to as "Canadian" since where I live, Canada eh!, all canoes look like that. There's a bunch of materials used to make canoes ... wood, canvas, fiberglass, Kevlar, aluminum and plastic. Here in Canada the plastic...

    Canadian canoe paint

Canadian eh? Do you have a picture of it? Does it have a manufacturer's decal or plate on it anywhere?

    What profile 14" tyres?

Bus has been lowered 3 inches with beam adjusters at the front and one spline at the rear. Could go lower at both ends but I don't want to sacrifice ride quality. Tires fit great with 195/65R14 at front and 205/70R14 at the rear. With those fronts the speedo is only 5% off, rears are equal to...

    Early bay 15" steels

This is a Beetle wheel. An easy way to tell the difference is the valve stem is centered between wheel nuts. On all buses, the valve stem is in direct alignment with a wheel nut. More info on bus wheels of all years can be found here ... http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=290000"...

Calling all bikers (of the motor variety)

Your Ninja 600 will definitely keep up with the VFR800, if not spank it as it has a 40kg weight advantage and much different power delivery. Being very flickable and light my SV650S was the perfect bike for me, not too fast but not too slow either, until I decided to take my son riding often. I...

Calling all bikers (of the motor variety)

If your new bike will fit ... get it inside! I always store my bikes in the garage to avoid theft, accidental damage and long term deterioration due to weather. My garage is 3m wide x 6m long x 3m high inside and holds all sorts of treasures including my bus (now on jack stands during winter)...

    Front seat belt fitting

I did the exact same as simo. All fits neat and tidy and works well. Edit - pictures added.

    teledials

Package them up in a box and ship them on a looooong boat ride. I'll pick them up on the other shore, mount them on my bus and test-ride them for ya. But don't be in a hurry to get them back though ... this is complicated stuff I'm proposing here. Deal?

    Which indicator lens?

So some original from the factory lenses came solid amber? I've seen aftermarket lenses that are one piece amber ... must be for the US market? My Euro spec bus from Belgium came with amber inserts in the clear lenses. Personally I prefer the clear lenses with amber bulbs, so I pulled the amber...

    Sliding door removal

This is what I did. Contact cement applied properly and the seal hasn't budged a bit and my door stills roles like new.

    Earlybay steel rims

VW made many 14/15/16" wide five rims for their various models all with different characteristics. When I was searching for some 15 inch splitty wide five rims for my bus, I found a few but some were splitty and some type 3 rims. If memory serves me correct, the bus rims always came with the...
