Was talking to a bloke at work today that was into aircooled VW's in the early 90's and he swears blind that a 009 dizzy with a decent exhaust was easily better than the stock equipment he had on his '57 oval beetle. Says it ran sweeter and gave more oomph.

From everything i read and heard, 009's are a bag of sh*t. Can understand the exhaust making an improvement but not the dizzy. Had a nice discussion and he still states that the 009 is alot better dizzy than the standard vac/advance for an aircooled engine.

What is the general feeling on this?

Used to run an 009 (pertronix ignitor fitted as well) with a twin quiet pack on my old bus, never had any problems or flat spots.
However got a stock one with a pertronix on this bus & that runs sweet as as well. Also got a spare bosch 009 with pertronix so will probably try both out once I have complted the engine rebuild.

I had a 1300TP in a very light beetle with a 009.
I never could sort the huge flat spot, even an Aircooled garage mechanic and two VW geeks couldn't sort it.
Got a vac dizzy, and it ran sweet as a nut.

Afaik, the SP engines respond better to 009s than the TP engines.

Personally, I'd pick a vacuum/mech advance distributor any day, but I've said this on your last thread :D

The late SVDA dizzy is effectively the same as a 009, but it has a vacuum to increase the timing when the throttle is just open a little bit. This increases the MPG the car can give, and improves the torque at low revs.

The 009 was much favoured for a while because many people mistook the jerky power dollops for an increase in power.

:)

IMHO, any increase in power the guy felt was either the above, or a lack of proper maintainance on the old distributor making it run poorly, which was highlighted by fitting a new (009) dizzy, new points and a new condensor.

009s are retarded. (sorry) :p

They're fine driving at a decent rev but off idle they're a pain, I've just chased up a decent vac dissy for my bus -
can't be doing with the on/off 009 nonsense around town.

Truth is every owner I know has adapted their driving style to suit the 009, put a noob in your dub
and you'll see the flat spot.

Dont get me wrong, i'm not swapping to a 009, its just a freindly discussion i was having with a work mate.
We spoke about alot of aircooled things, 041 heads, 1641 B&P, top end rebuilds etc and he seemed to have alot more knowledge about hings than i did.

I did agree that a decent aftermarket exhaust will wipe the floor with a stock one and that beefer heads (valves, springs etc) will be better than standard but this guy was insisting that 009 are the dogs danglies, he even said that if they were sh*t why were they included in most top end rebuild kits and i can see his arguemnt, not that i agree with him,
just after peoples opinions really, not wanting to start a whole debate.

For a performance motor they're fine, as are IDAs but for regular driving there are better options IMHO.

Cheap and available too.

Most top end rebuild kits have big twin carbs that have vac adv, its much easier to run a 009 with it than retro fit vac adv.

Vac adv is much better for everyday driving for all the reasons mentioned above. Most seasoned dubber will tell you 009 can be poop.
