Here is a vid of our '67 1500 Bug.

Can anyone help with a diagnosis ?
I've done and re-checked the tappets.
No idea now but love to snag it -
Help greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Al

It doesn't sound bottom end to me, does it have any end float? Are you sure the valves are correctly adjusted? I would say it's valve train related tbh. It could be the rockers have excess wear. I know it's a long shot but I spent 3 days trying to find the cause of a similar noise on a Cummins truck engine and it turned out to be that the rockers had worn a dip in the end and although they seemed ok with feeler gauges the area that hit the valve was actually really far out.

Thanks Karl
There is NO end float. I'm certain I did the tappets correctly, (but I err on the side of too loose rather than too tight).
What you say about worn rockers is interesting - the engine looks to be a newish dealer exchange engine - tho the top end could easily have been the old gear put back on I suppose.
I also agree It sounds valve train related. Do you think the rocker shaft itself could come loose, and the engine still run reasonably ? Or, what would you check next ?
Many thanks for taking the trouble to reply tho !
Regards
Al

It's possible but I think it would make alot racket than that :| I would suggest taking the rocker shafts off and checking the contact area. Pull the push rods too, 1 could be bent. Apart from that the engine sounds healthy and seems to run smooth.

Alot of exchange and recon engines do get fitted with used valve gear, rocker assemblies and push rods etc.

Yep - next chance I get I'll whip them off again and take a much closer look (Beetle off road at the moment as windscreen v badly cracked thanks to low flying rock recently) It's the G/F's daily driver too, so I'm on notice to get it fixed pronto !
I appreciate your help.
Thanks mate.

Can you use the 'long big screwdiver to the ear' trick to determine if
it's one side more than teh other ? Might narrow down to valve train.

I cant see the vid at work, but am dying to get home and check it out. My Ghia engine, 1500 s/p, has a bloody noise that could be the same.
No end float, runs wonderfully, re-set tappets, new exhaust, new alternator, no fan/tinwear interference, new clutch thrust bearing .... does my head in!

Thanks JS - good one - we used to do this on ohv engines back in the day - !

Clem - good luck, let me know what you find.
I opened up the noisier side today - one rocker has about 1.5 mm lateral play along the shaft - and pulling/pushing it sounds exactly like the rogue noise i'm getting when running.
I priced up a new set of thrust washers and spring washers - Will order them tonight and fit them as soon as they arrive.
I'll post again when done and report back hopefully with success.

Changed all washers on the rocker shafts -
re-set tappets -
noise still there (tho engine generally quieter)

disconnected the fanbelt to have a listen - noise still there - so NOT dynamo/fan related it seems.

Hope this thread is of use/interest to someone.
Any ideas on the noise would be most welcome.

I have heard a noise like that when the wrong oil pump was fitted but that was only at higher revs.

Possibly small ends
