I haven't tried to PEP up a 1500SP so cant give you any opinions on whether it is worth it or not.

I had a good luck in the past with simple old Solex-Kadrons. Very basic carbs but need to be coupled to a quality linkage (scat or CSP). Fitted to my old 1500SP engine (in a VW 181 Trekker). I sent the carbs to the States to be overhauled and vacuum connection added so I used a stock SVDA distributor. Car had a4-1 header with single quiet pack and purred around quite lively then stock setup.
