Just looking over my engine bay - a few queries to start off with:

Noticed on the oil filler that next to it on the same fixture as the cap is a small pipe and it seems just go into the case - is it normal for this to be open or should it connect into somewhere?

This hose seems to come in from behind the panel that covers the tank and goes into the very bottom of the carb - seems that the PO has attached two different sized pipes with insulation tape....firstly what is this? (fuel return?) and secondly what's the best way to match these two pipes together?

and finally - the air box only attaches on the front clip - the mount isn't big enough for both rear and front clips to attach....hoping someone has spotted this before, could be that the base needs turning round?

Thanks!

1. connects to the airfilter
2. thats your servo vacuum pipe replace the manifold end and fit your non return valve
3. a better pic may help to understand whats going on

As above,
No1 is part of the engine breather system and normally feeds back into the top of the carb
No2 is the tap off for the servo pipe
No3 ?????????????????????????????not sure what you mean and cant make it out from the picture

Aside from the clips on No3, you're also missing a hose from the bottom inlet of the air filter, which goes to a hole through the tinware at the rear of the engine bay (sort of back and slightly right of the dipstick) - a warm air feed which is switched in when it's cold.

cheers guys - it's all becoming clearer!

With the first question - that's cool - found this pic which is what it should be like?

The second one - think I might have found an issue with the manifold :( - the hose coming into the engine bay is larger than the hose off the manifold for the servo vacuum....perhaps I don't have a correct 1971 TP one as this pic shows a much larger pipe coming off it:

EDIT: this is clearer - I have the bottom TP manifold when I need the top one with the larger pipe for the servo connection:

Sorry - the 3rd question is a bit vague!

The bottom of the assembly has two clips but only one will attach at the front onto the mounting on the engine bay so it's attached but does rock forward without the clip connected at the back - wondering if it's the wrong type of filter?

With regards the missing hose....is this just a bit of duct like the one connected next to it? I've got a hole in the tinware that just goes through and assume this is where the cold air would be drawn in?

Think I need to get a parts list together....including the bently manual!

Thanks for the assistance so far

Yes it is just a peice of duct hose but its to draw the hot air from the exhaust and feed it into the carb (pre heat) to help stop icing up

Cheers for the link - same as the other guy on that thread - I just have a hole in the tin where the hose would connect but also have the vacuum connections on the top,

at the moment of the two the one on the left is blocked off and the other is just open :?

On point 2 I'm waiting to see if C&C, VW Heritage or Just Kampers can supply a 1971 intake manifold with the servo pipe - I'm thinking in the meantime of trying to get a reducer to take the 1/2 pipe down to fit on the manifold I do have

You really need to have the proper 201N manifold in your Bus. The manifold with the smaller vacuum port will not draw enough vacuum to properly activate the brake booster servo.

I doubt that you'll find a new replacement manifold at any of the resellers. You might try a breaker's yard for the 201N manifold. Here's a tip........the 201N manifold was also used in AutoStick Beetles and Karmann Ghias from 71 through 74.

WHS^^^^

also your filler should be flipped down over with a length of pipe out of the bottom exiting the tin with a small rubber pinch valve to allow excess oil to drip to the road surface rather than in the engine bay....

Have a look here for some clues (although there are pics of different ages of bus, so it might make it more confusing :))....

cheers all for the responses - I'm on the hunt for the manifold and assuming that my brakes will improve no end once it's fitted

I'll get the breather hose, connect up the vac line for the top of the filler and dig about and see where the other connects,

off to search for links for the bently manual as I assume this will show me what should be where!

Had a chat with the local VW specialist down the road from me - he's going to have a look and see about welding in the correct size servo pipe into the manifold whilst the bus is in with him on Monday and whether this can be done with the engine in/out, which would be much easier than attempting to find the correct manifold

Starting to come together - had thought after my last project was built up from nothing that I could say goodbye to elusive/missing bits :D - wishful thinking!

Attached the vacuum hose in from the carb to the top of the filter - just need to get some hose for the oil breather, correct vacuum hose, in line check valve, air duct to go down through the tin and work out what connects onto the second vacuum connection on the filter and I'm away :)

The left side inlet manifold has an addional bit so you can drill & tap an outlet for the servo
this is how I ran mine & I'm sure thats how Froggy has set his up

ahhhh - now that is an option  - would be easier to do than weld the manifold, cheers :)

I've just ordered the vacuum hose - rang JK and they said they couldn't get it - in case anyone else is looking I've ordered 13mm air line hose rated to 20 bar:

Will advise how I get on

Yep, this is how mine is plumbed, tried looking for a decent pic but all mine show the pipe but the tap off is hidden behind various parts

tap the inlet as Harlequin says....neater/easier

where is the bus going Zeds?

It's going to VW Technics - garage just north of Cambridge that specialise in VW's - when I called the guy he was more than happy to work on air cooled, would be handy to have a garage round the corner to get me out the crap when I take on something I shouldn't :D

Yep, Nick's right. I'm sure you feel you've got enough on your plate getting your servo working correctly, but without that pipe, the vacuum operated flap & valve and swan neck your van will run like poo in the winter months. I suffered for four years without the warm air pick up system connected, thinking that the 60 quid or so required to sort it out was never worth it. then I coughed up to get the correct parts (from megga bug, but others sell them) and the van was transformed.

Thanks for the advise! - I'll definitely get this resolved as would like to get everything hooked up the way it should be

I'll have a look around for pics to confirm how it should be connected and what bits I'll need, if anyone has advise on the two vacuum connections on the top of the air filter canister it would be appreciated - currently have one connected to the vacuum pipe on the front of the carb but the other is open to the elements?

I'll also plug up the connection that would have gone to the charcoal cannister

Cheers :)

This is an old pic (with my old air filter), but it shows the fresh air hose from the air filter to the preheat piece of tinware under the van - there should be a 'scoop' type thing which collects warm air from the cylinder head.

The hot air scoop is the one of the left... and normally protrudes through the rear tinware when fitted.

If you don't have that piece, you can buy one (it is separate from the exhaust system).

and finally, air filter connections...

CIMG9056.jpg

Make sure you get the metal connection connected to the inlet manifold, and the plastic one connected to the 'snout' of the filter. The connections on the top of the filter might be the other way round to mine, but if you do metal connector to metal connector on the inlet manifold, and plastic to plastic connection on the air filter snout, you'll be fine :)

Since taking the photos, I've added clips to hold the heater hoses in place ;)
