Which do I go for? 1776 will cost me approx £1000 more, is it worth it? If so, why?

Answers on a postcard please! LOL :lol:
 
Personally,

I would drive the van for a week or two first see what it drives like the general handling, get used to owning a bus then pose the question....

seriosly consider a full flow with the long drives you have planned....
 
If you are buying a brand new engine, I'd much rather have a 1745/1802 'mini stroker' engine than a 1776. (1584/1641 barrels and pistons with a 76mm crank)

In a bus, you need torque... a 1802cc engine shouldn't cost much more than a 1776, and can be built with stock heads if you don't need high revs. The extra stroke should provide more torque.

I intend to build one for my bus when I can. I've heard good reports from a few people on VZi who are strongly in favour of them, however :)
 
2007. It's the best of both worlds. Super strong, plenty of power.

I do think you are trying to run before you can walk.

You could be heading for disaster dabbling in performance engines with little experience.

A bigger more powerful engine will use more petrol.
Listen to the advice given above though. Get used to driving the van an van speeds :)
55-60 on a motorway is more than enough.
If you've got money to spare / spend then stay with the engine you've got and go for a set of twin Carbs. More power but roughly the same economy 8)
 
yeah the 1745 has had a few good ratings, if your not after performance perse, see what its running like and get a good twin carb set up, it will give you a little more and may well help on the pennies going into the tank....

36 DRLA dellortos (40's if your not a lead foot yob, will give you abit more) and a sensible cam will give you all you need to improve your throttle response while keeping your mpg up to scratch. twin carbs is just the start if you want to improve power and keep your economy. i would think that if you go any bigger than 1641 and dont improve other areas of the engine such as ignition, heads and exhaust etc. you will lose fuel economy. its the small but more involved mods that produce small increses in power that also help fuel economy. on a stock engine you chuck loads of fuel at a cylinder and the engine burns a small amount and throws the rest out of the exhaust due to in efficent flow. twin carbs will improve the flow of the fuel into the engine. this means that the engine you will need to throw less fuel at the engine to have the same performance. Get it? :D more power doesnt always mean less economy. a bus get 25-30mpg?? my bug with stock 1600 gets more than that round town, just because its lighter. as your power/weight ratio balances out should gain mpg. :D
 
EFI will give you even better MPG than any carburettor.

One problem is the stock gearbox is fairly low geared. Even with a good 1600 it's buzzy to drive.

I will be fitting a 2.0L box as soon as I can find one, (followed by an EFI 2007)!
 
1641cc with twin small carbs for budget.

1776 with 40's for better performance & reliability.

2007 for ultimate power & reliability.

EFI is electronic fuel injection, it is controlled by an ECU, Electronic control unit like a modern car. It tells the injectors when to squirt & how much. It can be fine tuned. I have got all the gubbins from a 2006 Bay window that has factory EFI. I will use a 'Megasquirt' ECU to control it all.
My engine has been built with low compression (8:1) so is ready for a turbo too. EFI & turbo's go together like peas & carrots. It has an Engle 100 & 1.25 ratio rockers. The heads are gas flowed too. Flowing heads is a must what ever engine you build. It is the most restrictive part of the whole motor.

ill be goin 1915cc with a six rib 2l box. twin 40 dells to begin with and EFI later on. have to wait a while though :(

very similar in my bus, got a 1915cc, six rib box and twin 40 webers, goes well, hopefully goes better at the end of the month after the carbs have been all set up and rolling roaded :mrgreen:
