Hi
Ive got a 72 bay first registered 20/09/72.Just looked in VWHeritage catalogue

Brake calipers 8/70-7/72 (reconditioned) X £117.50
" " 8/72> (Brandnew) £68.95 :)

Do I need the 8/72> ones at £68.95 "I HOPE" or is there other factors
Cheers...Dave

ha ha this one again.......

in reality its the expensive option as they are no longer produced .... but if you look further on their site they do the full kit to enable you to fit the late calipers (calipers included) or you can buy the adaptors seperately and fit your own sourced calipers (late bay) or make/source your own spacers and longer bolts to offset / centralise the caliper over the disc....

PM ronmidg he recently fitted the kit he may be able to help you with the dimensions of the spacers or I think Froggy went that route too....

I was looking into knocking out a few on the lathe but its ****** may get round to buying a new one yet..... If you do get the dimensions get them to me and I'll see if i can get summit sorted, i believe its only about a 5mm shift but JK want summit like £19 for the adaptors and bolts....

Cheers for that info Araon

Here is a picture of the caliper in Question

Oh yep they are looking decidedly messy...... that second one looks from the pic to have a little damage to the casting?

Johnny was getting rid of his brake set up that may be the other option....think they were of reasonable/useable condition.... if he still has them.....

then just get a refurb kit for a few notes clean and fit.....

buy these on ebay and all you need are 72-79 calipers

i have a set of 71 calipers i would sell, you can still get both 70-71 pads easily enough.

Hi johnny
Are the calipers I have the same as yours 8/70-7/72 or do they look different if so they could be 8/72 type..GSF do the later type and the picture in there catalogue looks very similar to the ones I have but are on an exchange. The casting on mine is broke so wondering if they would exchange. If you could tell me that mine are definately the 8/70-7/72 ones I will buy the adapter bolts and fit later type calipers...
Cheers...Dave
"my brain is starting to hurt"

your driving a 72 crossover big rear low light front first registered in sept 72 however if you can dig out the vin no and M plate that will be more deffinate on the production date.... as yours was registered so close to the august changeover period I would suggest it is a pre august (XO) set up ie the early calipers as per Johnnies set....

Bay window calipers came in 3 styles early 71s' (single bleed nipple) 71-72 (double bleed nipple) and late bay (markedly larger with bigger pistons and spacing between halves).... they all look very similar and are best compared side by side to appreciate the difference in size between earlies and lates.

If it is a XO then you will have the early twin nippled calipers unless (unlikely after seeing those pics) someone has already converted to late brakes but if they have then when you removed them you would have pulled the spacers too as per that set on the ebay add supplied by johnny.

By the way johnny do you have pics of your calipers and what you wanting for them?

A bit off-topic, but have ya got a lathe dude?

That information could be useful to me ;)

I do but its fooked and once I've sorted out recieving the van back this week will be looking at getting one what you after?

the m plate is mounted behind the nearside seat on the bulkhead, this will give pruduction details

http://www.type2.com/m-codes/

but your chassis number indicates a model 72 so it will have the smaller calipers so you have a choice of buying Johnnies old calipers and just refurbing them as he says the pads are still available and your away on the cheap and possibly suggest you refurb your good one as a running spare. or get the kit off ebay for £7 less than JK and source some good second hand late calipers again for less than JK....

personally I would rather go the route of the og calipers if Johnies are in good order and the price is right.... with your good one refurbed you should do fine and if you look closer at the damage you may get away with reworking the other as the damage doesnt look too bad from the photo....

I need a few hingepins turned, for my beetles doors. The doors have some majorly loose top hingepins, and have been drilled out by a few mm to fit overly large ones previously.

It will just need a bit of fairly strong steel machining to the right diameter to knock into them, I'd have thought. :) I think you can buy round steel cross-section bits so it wouldn't be too much effort?

Obviously, lots of beer / money or similar would be provided 8)

may have a lathe sourced :? not sure yet being a cheap skate northern monkey I dont like to spend money (actually not true helen doesnt like me to spend money) drop us the dimensions you want and if it happens i'll get onto it as my first test spin.... maybe someone like 67 Bay might be able to help in the mean time....

ive basically everything from the steering knuckle, hub+discs+caliper and knuckle, i was looking for £100 the lot but i would part it out. I had some pics up ill go dig them out again.

Are these new ones?

If link doesn;t work either type 'brake calipers bus' in search (loads results)or 698 461 211

the 71-72 calipers are the same except for the extra nipple, there are only two pad sizes 15 and 19mm, yours are the earlier caliper,

I would advise replacing them with brand new later calipers 72--> and use the bolts i had linked above. Much cheaper and safer in the long run.

Thats the way I have gone.I wasn't sure if I had the later calipers, but now I have the spacers/adapters I can now clearly see the difference.Hoping to get droped spindles at a later date.I will purchase the later ones and change every thing over and Ive only wasted money on the adapters, that I can sell on any way Cheers for the info..Dave

Araon you got pm

I went with the JK conversion, new calipers, pads etc.
Easy fitment and then at a later date i will fit the later spindles (hopefully dropped) giving a complete new front braking system
