History/Paperwork:
Brought into the country in 2005 by VW Relics.
Imported from California.
The seller is the only owner since it’s import.
UK Registered.
Tax Exempt.
MOT until 30th April 2013.
Underside:
The underside is totally solid. It has had a repair to the O/S Cab Floor at some point, possibly by VW Relics or before import.
Bodywork:
Overall the bodywork is in good shape and is typical of a dry state import. There is some surface rust in places, the paint is completely faded and the rubbers and seals are perished. It has had a repaint at some point in its life in California, there is evidence of the use of filler in some places but this is probably due to dents/scrapes from normal use and there is no evidence of crash damage or rot.
The O/S Battery tray has had a poor quality repair and will need replacing. There is also rust bubbling on the rear corner where it meets the battery tray. There is similar bubbling on the N/S rear corner.
The rear corners have had some holes drilled in it in an attempt to aid engine cooling, these have been filled over again during the repaint. The filler has started to crack, to repair properly these will need welding up.
The rear bumper had a few dents, and has had two notches cut in for clearance when the van was fitted with a Beetle exhaust. This was replaced with the correct bay window exhaust. The bumper is fairly easily repairable. The front bumper and cab steps are solid, but with repairable damage on one side.
The front panel inner and outer is in fairly good order, however the windscreen is leaking. This is due to a perished seal and does suggest rust lurking underneath the rubber.
The tailgate was getting rusty along the bottom edge so the owner has fitted a replacement, Californian import rust free tailgate. He had planned to keep the van and have it resprayed.
Interior:
The interior is in pretty good shape. The front headliner has a small tear. One sunvisor is missing. The standard front seats have been replaced with sensible alternatives. There is a custom made center console/arm rest. A dash shelf/tray has been fitted.
The Westy interior is in good condition. The cool box is missing.
Engine/Driving Experience:
The van drives and runs well, it’s just come back from a tour of Scotland. Brakes are good, rides nicely. Gear selection very good. Negligable whine from gearbox in 1st and 2nd, no issues of jumping out of gear. Does smell like its running rich, would benefit from a good service and the carb setting up. The starter sometimes takes a couple of goes to engage. Its the same issue my truck has developed after I had a new solenoid fitted. I think it might be down to the starter motor bush. I've found with both busses it does it less the more its used! Steering box is a little sloppy. Not sure if idler arm has been replaced, would make sense to do this first though.
Fresh back from Scotland, with genuine midgies:
Washed off:
Polished up:
Overall:
A good solid bus for sensible money. You can jump straight in and start using it. Maybe run it for another year or two. It will then make a solid base for a respray. With a nice paint job and some engine work this will easily be a £15k+ van.
As the owner is working away I am handling the sale, so any questions, viewing requests etc can all be direct to me through forum PM.
Viewings welcome but I work 6 days a week, so please no dreamers, tyre kickers, test pilots. I also should note that I served my apprentiship restoring and selling import Volkswagens and I've been an air cooled VW owner since passing my driving test aged 17 so ******** merchants offering £3k will be wasting mine and their own time!
£6995.
