Adhesive removal - advice needed

What's the best way to remove 40-year old adhesive from interior perforated vinyl/leatherette type material? The original stick-on velcro strips stuck on to hold the ends of the curtains down is now coming away, leaving a nice yellow adhesive stain - the velcro will need to be completely removed and the area cleaned before new strips are put back up.

Will white spirit/meths do the job without damage or is there something better?
