I have just purchased my first VW [danbury tintop] and am wondering about security.
Has anyone got any advice regarding the fitting of an alarm system [make] etc...
Any success stories would be appreciated. :?:

Only got a couple of pictures.
Your van looks mint.

Mine need a few bits and pieces doing to it.
Just had to fit new window winder mechs, as the nearside fell down when driving.
Just getting the brakes sorted as well.

Cheers

with the value of buses now and how easily they could be stripped and cut up for spare panels, I'd want a traker and thatcham approved security system.

you can even get a security sytem (originally for motorbikes) that is like a liqiud that contains thousands of tiny discs with your vehicle info on (a bit like glitter flake), I think its called micro dot or somethign similar, that you spray into all the panels and crevices - it could never be removed. Even if the vehicle was cut up for spares they would contain the tiny pieces and so would be traceable.

Security was my main thinking when I was doing my '67 bug (http://www.steve-brown.co.uk/MyOldCar/. Here's what I did:

- suicide doors/hidden hinges/solenoid locks (no external locks for thieves to play with and even if they had a go, they'd more than likely play around with the wrong end of the doors as they wouldn't know they were suicides.)

- removable steering wheel using Snap Off boss (try driving a car with no steering wheel)

- hidden ignition switch in centre tunnel

- hidden starter button (in the gear knob ala James Bond ejector seat - very cool!)

- hinged and lockable panel under-dash for stereo and CD changer

- alarmed

Cheers. Had to sell it to get some funds into our wedding account though back in 2003. Wife was worth it though.

It's still going strong apparently. I built a twin 40 Dellorto'd 1776cc Engle 120 for it and on the standard 1200 box acceleration was amazing. The guy who bought it from me put a Rancho Freeway flyer in it but could never get near my best 1/4 mile time of 16.3.

I do miss it though. Now in the midlands apparently.

Yeah, she was...erm...still is

Funnily enough, North Beds is where I'm from originally (Oakley then Olney). Where are you?

if your in for a tracker there are several good and fairly cheap gps/gsm versions. if your serious about tracking you will need a system that relays both type of signal as if the van is garaged the GPS wont function and the gsm can relay a signal via phone networks to your mobile or the police, it requires the purchase of a prepay card though. the postion is worked out through triangluation. the Police are actually pretty keen to act if you have a tracker fitted. I guess it would be the thought of catching a thief in the act would get them mobilised :D . Ive heard about a car that got recovered within 10 mins of being stolen. the device will even have a perimeter setup that will send you a text if its moved outside that area without your knowledge.

check out fleabay for the trackers they cost about £180 all in. Some are even clever enough to allow tracking via google maps
