should i get rid of my heat exchangers???????

i'm carrying out a restoration at the moment and thinking about the exhaust system to fit to my rebuilt engine.

Although the heat exchangers i have are original (going by the size of the fins inside) the skins around them are well gone. at the minute i have a piece for generic flexi heater hose running from the exchanger to the Y tube. therefore, no riser, no control box and no confluted hose on either side.

a new system would therefore cost approx £390

two heatexchangers = £240
two control boxes = £75
two heater risers = £50
two confluted pipes = £25

in replace of the heat exchangers i would have J tubes coming down to fit onto my exchaust manifold, giving me a less restrictive engine. what has been suggested then in removing the Y tube and the heater channel that runs under the centre belly pan. then where the heater channel goes through the cross member beam fit my propex into here. that way i can still have heat up to the windscreen or pointing backwards between the two front seats. I already have a pretty much brand new propex HS2000 (2kW).

Just wondered if anyone has done this. i'm quite keen to do it, especially if the propoex will fit under the van, bewteen the floor and the belly pan

Nice idea I was thinking along the same lines for my webasto.... again getting rid of the restriction on the exhaust and aiding the oil cooler...

I was hoping to get the rear under bench vents included too....

Watching with interest :D

i have already done this and it works fine, i connected the propex a bit further back so as to get heat under the bench seat.

My plan is for a 2.1 with j tubes as the heating on mine is totally crap. I have taken the propex out for a repaint so i dont have any pics sorry.

sounds all feasible then. was hoping to get enough heat backwards by just plumbing into the part between the seats.

do you think i may have to use the bit under the back seats? was hoping to keep all of that free.

Arao. - also removing the heat exchangers will free up the rocker covers as well as the oil cooler.

Loxy pointed out that it may be possible to mount spare tyre underneat if i removed the heater channel! depends if i can still put my belly pan on. after paying for a stainless steel one i dont wanna not use it lol
