Hope someone will be able to help with a problem that has started recently, when I'm slowing down the van pop pop pops (backfires)I've checked the valve clearance, timing and plugs it is a t4 2ltre and has twin solex carbs and has electronic ignition

Backfire on deceleration is usually caused by air leaks in either the exhaust or crab manifolds so check all your fittings and gaskets and that you don't have a hole in the exhaust.

This!
Even the tiniest air gap in the exhaust system will cause a backfire on deceleration.
