Bench starting an engine

You need a gearbox bell housing with a starter, rig up a ignition switch and starter button/key associated wiring to starter, and coil, from a battery and a petrol can/mower fuel tank hung higher than the engine, piped to your fuel pump (unless you're running a elec pump, one of those too)

Cheers. Need to track down a bell housing as the van is 20 miles away from engine. Been watching utube to see how it's done. Concerned that the engine was rebuilt a year ago and has been sat idle. Can't see it going in any time soon.

I have never done it but kept these links just in case.

I just did this at the weekend, don't forget to ensure your carb fuel cut-off (if you have one) is wired to the coil +ve so it opens when you put power to the coil.
My engine had been sitting for 3 years so I span it over on the starter until the oil pressure light went out (just used a standard electrical tester from +ve to the pressure switch being -ve)
I also chucked a little dribble of fuel down the carb just to be sure it fired before I had start troubleshooting the fuel pump and carb if it didn't.
Good luck!
