Was just checking my m-plate and noted that there was some brake fluid leakage, attempted to tighten the clamp on the hose and next thing the contents of the reservoir dumped itself out from around the hose

Pic below shows (ish) that it's the rubber boot that's split that goes onto the plastic of the assembly and the hose clamps onto - must have been leaking through it and me touching it just caused it to go completely

JK do this part but it looks slightly different to mine:

Brake Reservoir Seal - J11266

£ 2.35 £ 2.35

Might be worth for the sake of £15 getting the reservoir they sell also to ensure they fit together and whilst I'm going to be bleeding brakes?

it's due to go in for the manifold work on Monday and might need to go collect the bit (though it's 3 hours there!)....not sure if there is anything I can get locally to work? - I hate brake fluid, sure I can hear it bubbling my paint now

There's a bright side I suppose - at least it went whilst the van was in my garage and not out and about somewhere!

I assume the bus takes normal DOT4 brake fluid?

Cheers,

Larry

I've sent you an email to your gmail account,

Cheers Graham - I'll take your advise and replace the pipe whilst I'm on it along with the rubber seals, much appreciated!

result - my mum's coming up for the weekend tomorrow and has dropped by Odiham and collected a new brake reservoir and grommet - also managed to find the grommet from my local VW van dealer using the online VAG catalogue 8) http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=18273&p=159157#p159157 so hopefully will have it back and working for the manifold work on Monday - happy days :)

Touch wood - all's gone well and the new reservoir and boot have been on for the last 10 mins with no leakage! - couldn't get the pipe as well so will have to keep digging to find it (it's flared at the end, so don't think generic clear brake pipe will work)

The new reservoir from JK fits perfectly, slightly different shape and less capacity than the original so assume a repo but is pretty solid, the gasket from JK though is for a later bus and doesn't fit - the one I got from VW though is the exact part :)

For those looking in the future - the gasket you need is part number 221 611 833 C and can be ordered from your local dealership, worth getting one in as mine was perished (more like plasticine than rubber after being attacked by brake fluid for 38 years ;) )

Haven't bled the brakes as don't want to tempt fate and bodge anything else before it goes round the corner for the servo work :D - as it is all the air rose up out of the pipe as I refilled it so none in the system, though I'm not sure how quickly the fluid absorbs moisture...should be negligible and will do this once it's back

Shiny bits in place:

Cheers Graham for the advice and part numbers :)
