I have been cleaning and rust treating the rear of my '71 and found another hole in the bump stop bracket, the bump stops have been cut by a third after it was lowered but my mechanic matey says 'cut them off completely' as I don't really need them, is that true?

I guess it depends how you use your bus/van. If you might overload the suspension accidentally, you carry a heavy load, say a camping conversion and a bunch of campers, then cause a big suspension movement, say a pothole or a big bump on a not very level campsite, the bump stops prevent an overstress of the suspension parts by limiting the suspension deflection. For smooth roads and light loads I would agree they will never be used.

you can buy lowered bump stops from places like red9 if you are concerned about a failure.

personaly I would keep them, they are there for a reason, I think its to stop your wheels van from itting the deck if your susspension failed. I kept min, but cut them down.

Cheers guys :) confused as **** now lol

Should I get the bump stop mounts repaired or cut them off?

Gut feeling is to get them repaired cos I have had loads of old fellas telling me VW knew what it was making.

Bad digging back is saying 'whatever is cheapest'

Thanks Ron? :) Good points to thionk about, I will have to use my bus for work when she is finally finished and I have had to move tons of stuff...???

I'm in exactly the same predicament t2t.when the bus was medai blasted it exposed a bit of corrosion in the rear bump stop bracket. As it stands I've instructed the restorer to repair it,however if I were to remove/leave it,my concern is the MOT !!
