when our bus is cold the engine will start no problem with the starter only turning over for a short period of time before the engine runs, but when I run it for 20 mile or so and stop the engine e.g. stopping for fuel. I find that the engine takes longer to start and you must pump the throttle to get the engine to start. Has anyone come across this before? there are a few things that might be the problem but before I start changing out lots of different parts I thought I would ask the question here.

Check all the basic engine tune and ensure the choke is fully off. Just sounds like hot start problem these engine suffer with, heat soak.I have always found a bit of throttle when cranking the engine from hot and it starts no problem.I think there was a mod for hot start problems, but cannot think what is was at the moment.

Mine does the same.....the manual actually says keep foot flat to floor on accelerator when starting it hot. I tried it the other day after a 20 mile run and it did actually start faster. Maybe worth trying it out.

Thanks guys, running twin carbs on the engine. I find if I pump the throttle pedal it will eventually start, never really had that problem with my beetle, I thought maybe the fuel was evaporating in the carb bowls or possibly a problem with the battery, but it starts no probs when cold, first kick of the starter.

many thanks for the replys

I run twin carbs on mine as well, twin 34`s. Mine starts the same hot or cold. Might be worth just double checking your valve clearances because the gaps do close up a little when the engine warms up and that`s part of the design, but if they is just a tad too tight on the clearances when cold,, hey presto when they get warm then the valves ain`t quite closing totally. Some peeps set the clearances a little tighter thinking they are doing a better job and they is being more pernickety, but it don`t quite work like that. Next time you go for a spin, have a listen to how quick you think the motor is turning over when you start at cold, then listen to how fast it turns over when starting it hot, does it `sound` just a little quicker ???? Does it sound like it`s almost starting when it`s hot but not quite catching ??

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,, Good fun these busses int they  :p

Have a search on this forum for a "hot start relay"

We fitted one of these, and Bod starts first time every time - a massive difference!!!
