BUSFEST BONAWEEN REPORT

Our first BONAWEEN camp went very well indeed (a lot better than we could have possibly hoped for) as we had almost perfect weather (apart from it being wet, windy and cold!) for the most important times during the weekend. :msn4:

The advance Crew arrived on the Thursday & (following the seasoned advice of our Busfest Trade Manager) managed to get themselves completely bogged down in the middle of the field. (A well seasoned camper would have course, kept to the higher ground on the left of the field and headed for the tree line around the edge of the site, where it was bound to be better drained!)

So the message I had before I left on the Thursday evening to come to the site was BRING SYNCRO! (which I was going to anyway if there had been any sign of people likely to be getting stuck in the field)

Friday was spent preparing the field for the arrival of our Bonaweeners. This included helping the local camping club put up marquee and building the Bonfire.

In true Halloween style the fuel for the bonfire was sourced locally and was made up almost entirely of OAK. We had several pallets of waste wood from a company that supplies all the undertakers in the area, YES, our BONAWEEN BONFIRE was made up from COFFIN wood (and boy did it burn well!).

People arriving soon got themselves set up ad produced same amazing decorations for their vans (and some fearsome looking pumpkins as well!)

Friday night was a “get to know everyone night huddle & dance night” in the marquee which (because we had use of a fantastic diesel heater) was as warm as the Devils Dungeon.

I Know What You Did Last Summer & I’m sure that The Hills have Eyes , (we Saw it for ourselves), but The Others must have seen The Shining sun was The Omen that our BONAWEEN Thing was going to be a Scream.

Overnight Friday it was very windy (and wet) though this did not dampen spirits (although it did manage to magically “Carrie” a few things away.) It was a Dawn of the Dead for awnings & gazeebo’s.

I think there was also a bit of Paranormal Activity overnight as well, my van was full of chicken feathers, ( it must have been a Poultrygeist!).

During the Saturday morning (before the Tea & Coffin morning! - even Gouls & Vampires have to have beverages as well), we completed the Halloween decorations, which included installing a giant spiders web into the roof of the Marquee. One of the (genuine) very spooky happenings over the weekend was that within an hour of putting the giant spiders web up hundreds of REAL spiders started to populate it and also started building their own webs over the disco gear.

Weather conditions on Saturday for the main part of our Bonaween were perfect. Our Bonaween Monsters Ball in the Marquee was a real scream,( the clocks going back meant we also had another hour to “kill” a few more dance moves as well.) Some amazing characters & costumes ensured there was plenty going on.

We had an awards session during the Ball Congratulations to everyone who took part & put so much effort into their costumes and decorations.

Winner of Best Dressed Van: Annabel Bowen

Winner Best Lady; (Vampire) Lynne Kemp

Winner Best Man; (Clown) Martin Coombes

Winner Best Girl; (Witch) Lucy

Winner Best Boy; (Bat) Ollie

Winner Best Pumpkin Kelly Hooper

The Bonfire and Fireworks also all went off in very spectacular fashion. (The Bonfire was still smouldering on the Monday!)

We had a total of 54 paid up units on the site during the weekend.

Many thanks to those of you who made a real effort to make this a really memorable and enjoyable (scary) family event.

The feedback we have had so far has been extremely encouraging. The message(s) we are getting (not from the spirits!) is that there MUST be a BONAWEEN 2 but it must not get too big and should remain in the same/similar format as the first.

SO, BONAWEEN 2 will happen over the weekend of 25-27th October 2013 & to keep it nice small & SCARY it will be limited to 150 Camping units.

Pictures and other BONAWEEN bits (and Bites) & pieces are located on our BONAWEEN Facebook page here;
