So my 69 Panel is in the body shop and the colour of choice was settled being L345 light grey .I was a little worried about the fact that it has quite a greenish tinge but have seen a few pics of various buses in the colour on the web and although pictures, light etc can play a big part in how it appears on screen compaired to real life I figured it still was as close to where I wanted to go .Until today that is ,when I popped my golf in for an MOT and my friend who owns the garage showed me his beetle which happened to be freshly painted in L595 Fontana Grey.seen below. It in my eyes is lovely and although not strictly a panel van colour option ,is still a 60's VW paint colour .So having seen that and baring in mind I'm not going period correct on every aspect ,slammed ,narrowed beam ,air, sprints stars etc I don't think it should matter .I think it will be a pretty forgiving colour to .If anyone has a bus painted in Fontana grey I'd love to see it.
Hers my mates beetle

your van your way mate im sure it will look stunning in that colour

my westy is 3 different shades where PO have done repairs in the past so anything is better in my eyes

You're only going to do it once so take your time and make sure you pick right.

The only thing I'd say is do you want it to look original or not, Fontana was never an early bay colour whether commercial or not, personally I'd go with Light Grey (which is a great colour and only used on commercials) but at the end of the day its your van.

Ive never seen a greenish tinge in Light Grey so are you looking at original colours or modern variants, the problem now is pigments available have changed from the 70's so colours do look slightly different (we had to have Brilliant Blue specially mixed to match the existing paint on our microbus).

Cheers for the input Graham ,I think most of the light greys I've seen only on the net arnt original .My bus is far from original as much as its suspension/running gear etc plus the interior once done, so I think I'm going with a colour I've seen in the flesh and definatly like which I guess is the most important thing. I think it will suit a commercial vehicle and make a nice background for the sign writing when the time comes..
Roll on D day
