I've had my van restored however there are some parts of the chassis and wheel arches that I'd like to chassis paint as they either weren't restored so haven't been done or have been painted the same colour as the van body (do people prefer colour coded wheelarches or black? Think I prefer black). Anyway, I was recommended some stuff called shultz but I can't seem to find it anywhere. Doing a search on here gives POR15 as a suggestion. Does anyone have any recommendations at all? Is the hammerite stuff any good?
Cheers

did you mean body schutz ? this is o.k for if what you a covering is rust free or has been treated as it is rubberised and will seal what you are spraying but that means it will also seal any rust or water behind it to do its damage too.

I have used Hammerite in the past and wouldn't use it for a job that is to last more than 4/5 years. I've found it tends to go brittle and flake off.

everyone seems to rave about POR 15,but I've never used the stuff. There is plenty of threads over on Vzi about it though.

If you don't want a 'cosmetic' finish then whatever paint you use can be coated with Waxoyl (Black or clear) it stays relatively soft and can be touched up easily. imo hth

I can't speak from experience, but reading all of the restoration threads at ssvc they mostly use Rustoleum, brush painted, finishes with no brush marks and is a finishing paint with rust inhibitor, but flexible. Looks good, and from reading the forums over there has a good life to it too. Hope that helps. Nick

thanks for all the tips. I'll have a look at them and avoid hammerite I think....
Wheel arches have def been treated so they shouldn't be a problem to do and the other areas I was thinking of was the inside of the bumpers but I may just waxoyl that instead.

Waxoil is the best you can use imho, it stays flexible and will always keep protecting and is the only thing you need to protect the underside and hidden box sections, shultz and the like is just a cover over for repairs and will go brittle and trap moisture .
If por is so good why dont the car bodyshops use it ;) just my opinion.

Can't beat old old waxoil in my opinion. i find that it leaves a decent finish, providing you get it warm enough so its easier to get a smooth finish

hi,
the only thing about the waxoyl route is the fact that the wheelarches are already sprayed the same colour as the body (blue) and I don't want that - i want them black and I don't think wxiyl is really going to give me that look. I'm thinking POR15 or Frost chassis black now (which contains POR15) and then waxoyl on top (plus into the cavities)

I've used por15 a lot in the past but i don't really rate it  (begs the question...) its good on 'rust' if done with 2 coats (as it says...)but most chassis that i've seen are a mixture of old paint, bare metal and rust and if you're like me you're not going to scrub off all the old paint and let it go a bit 'rusty' so that the POR 15 will take to it. don't get me wrong the por is good - it just starts to peel off any old painted areas after 4 years or so. Practical classics did a 'which buy' on rusty paints a couple of years ago, POR 15 came out pretty bad from their 'beardy' test. I reckon waxoil / anchorwax is probably the best option for most applications unless you're doing a show vehicle, don't worry about the colour - it will soon go all lovely and dark once it starts collecting all the dirt along the road..
