Having got the old girl to tick over ok it now seems that the choke is not working correctly from stone cold. When I floor the pedal the choke cam is not dropping down onto the fastest idle step on the cam. It seems to be sitting on the second step.
It starts first turn and will run but very slow, and if I tickle the pedal for half a minute to warm it up it will pick up on revs and run quicker. Five mins and if I flick the pedal it comes of the cam and idles spot on.
Is it cos of the warmer weather that it does not sit on the fastest part of the cam? or is something wrong or needs adjusting?

Could be either, but from memory mine would go on to one of the top steps on the cam even on hot days, the choke would just work faster in hot weather.

Could be you choke is goosed, or badly adjusted, look for the notch in the side of the choke element and align this with the top notch on the carb body, you may also need to check the the coil spring in side the choke is hooked on to the choke lever.
If all else fails get a new element there not that expensive.

Oh also check that the wiring to the choke is making good contact.
