Hi all, just been thru a gearbox swop due to worn/mismatched crown & pinion. Whine now gone but getting a clunking from the rear s I slow down, only under braking . Leave the brakes and it goes. Was suspecting bad cv, but having read a bit will check circlips, any other suggestions for this symptom?

Hi Bud, I`d firstly be looking at the most recent meddling about, as in stretched mounts etc. plus I`d like to get under and find anything shiney. Are you lowered or stock ? Another one to look at is the doughnuts from around your springs. Is it just a clunk or is it more of a clunk clunk clunk? Maybe you can have a peep inside at the release / thrust bearing with a camera of some kind as they can play silly buggers.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,slightly bettererer noise description if you can

Just fixed a ticking noise under braking on my beetle - turned out to be worn drums, probly a different thing but worth eliminating

Just had a thought prompted by ^^^ this post above. If you jacked up both rear wheels with a trolley and stands  then see if you could recreate this noise by just turning the wheels, possibly with two of you turning both wheels simultaneously, then try it with the handbrake on just one click, then two clicks, etc etc. There’s no prop shaft so you’d get right close to the noise I reckon, especially if it’s in the rear. You might be buggered if it’s the front pretending to come from the back though

Ozziedog,,,,,, won’t be the first time

Another thought, if it’s an early early bay, pop the split pins out and check your big nuts is up around a zillion pounds of torque.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,, way way way toooo much thinking first thing in the morning

Thanks for the suggestions. Its a klunk klunk klunk as I brake to a stop. Good idea to raise the rear and spin the wheels manually, and will check the drums too. Main suspect still the circlips on the drive shafts due to the gearbox swop.

Wheel nuts. I’ve been there with loose nuts.

That ^^^ or loose drive shaft bolts, there’s quite a lot of them that are a bit ackward to get done up tight unless you keep turning them shafts around. And,,,, these have been fiddled with recently.

Ozziedog,,,,,,,,, the most recently fidgeted with is usually the main suspect .

Ok so not the circlips, both shafts have about 15mm play. Wheel bolts are tight as are the big nuts. Next step raise the rear and spin the wheels then apply handbrake to see which side...
