I've driven round the block a few times now - have identified a few problems

changing up thro' the gears is fine and so is reverse

but changing down from 3rd to 2nd is almost impossible as is re-engaging 1st gear when approaching a junction - sometimes when trying to change down into 2nd, I'm sure I'm almost engaging reverse

I noticed with the stock gear stick that 1st and 2nd were getting a bit 'clunky' - is it likely that the linkage may need tweaking?

does anyone have any ideas?

You will not regret it.....it makes such a diffrerence!!

Not only a crisper, shorter shift but no more bending forward to reach for the stick.

If you have played around with the positioning of the plate it could be the linkage...its defo worth giving the guys at machine 7 a call cause they are dead helpful and will be able to point you in the right direction.

I sometimes have trouble getting into 2nd when changing down but I've had this on most of my VW's to be fair....and also engaging 1st when coming to a stop - I don't think you meant to do this anyway???
