OK - sounds odd - bear with me

I have a beam with 71 early discs - with everything working fine and has new pads etc
I also have a later beam with the 73 on discs and calipers, again all working fine.

Both are 112mm pcd [small 5], other than the obvious hard to get early caliper parts - is there any other difference?

ie track, height, wheelbase? I can't see anything other than the obvious different caliper sizes??

thanks

ok - thanks

It was just my weird logic.....

The 71 stuff is a pain to fix if it goes wrong [well in my understanding anyway] ie the calipers are a mare to get hold of... so I thought I'd just use the later stuff as it's a) readily available and b)also 112 PCD which is what I want for the choice of wheels [fuch reps]

I have a 2" narrowed beam so the additional 5mm wouldn't be that much of an issue.....BUT perhaps I'll stick with the original plan of getting the 71 dropped spindles from Transporterhaus.

Is there any other reasons why you should or should not use 71discs?

Thanks

Hi dubdubz
Theres nothing wrong with them 71-72,its just as you say.The 73> parts are more availiable/cheaper if they need replacing. If both sets are in good nick,Looking into the future  Id roll with the 73-79 set up and sell the 71-72 .More money towards the dropped spindles/shocks :D

Thanks GH....I do hear you, the snag is the later setup is on my 73 x dresser, which is to be sold eventually [when I get around to finishing it!] the 68 is a keeper [as much as that means!! 8) ]

so it was a case of swapping them over, the 73 got all new brakes, discs, calipers and pads and the 68 which had a 71 beam on is all good too, Tim at Roadhouse Retro refurbed and refreshed them, and they're as good as new ;)

I also have a spare set of late bay arms and spindles [beam was toast], so I had thought about sending those as cores, putting the new stuff from my 73 on the 68 to get it mot'd and rolling again, then use the dropped spindles [73on] when I get them back, on the 68, use the new calipers and discs from the 73, put the 71 earlier calipers stuff on my 73 and then have a std set of 73on spindles/arms as spares again....phew.

If I went 73on on both vehicles [totally possible] I'd have to buy another set of calipers and discs, as the 'spare' beam that was rotten, the calipers were seized and the discs worn! Balljoints required also enter into the equation but then it gets super complicated!

Justkampers sell a caliper conversion kit allowing you to use post '73 calipers and pads on early discs, i have used this now for over a year and never had any issues, although early discs are more expensive than the later type.

Hi what that kit does is it allows you to fit 73-79 calipers to the 71-72 spindles.
By useing the bushes J12624 it spaces the caliper over by 4-5mm,
and because the later calipers have larger mounting bolts it reduces the hole dia.So the 71-72 smaller bolts can be used.
The kit has 2 calipers (73-79)
4 bushes
4 longer bolts (4-5mm)
not sure if you get the pads though

oh ok - the discs are still available then I see and are a couple of quid dearer....is the psiton and therefore braking any different? not sure I can measure that???

the other thing seeing as it's brake related - I have a brake booster it appears in reasonable shape and it's an ATE one, the rubber dust cover is split though and I understand this part is NLA, what or how have people repaired/reconditioned these ?
and other than dust duties will the booster work with the split dust seal?

thx
