dismantling oil bath air filter

is it poss to separate the upper part of the oil bath air filter to expose the gauze innards? full of gunk and wire shreds...paraffin wash not solving!!

From memory...no.I think I tried and came to the conclusion I'd have to damage it to split.

mine doesnt come apart. Nov 69 build. Ive just cleaned it out with rags after a white spirit slosh. Filled with new oil up to the red line.

thanks for the replies - I guess I shall have to ditch the upper half with the wire gauze inside, as the wire mesh seems to have decomposed into tiny hair like strands and if I cannot access the innards to clean it all out then I guess it's gash!
