Hi,

I have an issue with my flaps!! :D

I am just putting all the tinwear back on the engine and about to re-instate the thermostat linkage that was missing - on the engine the only items were the flaps and the bar between them.

Now I was having difficulty understanding how the rod can work the flaps. Checking here I have seen the following -

(thanks to Bookwus for the picture taken from this thread - http://forum.earlybay.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=15229&hilit=cooling+flaps" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

But my flap appears to be missing the item that the rod connects to.

Am I right and is it kernackered?? Anyone have any better pictures?? I have searched but not many close ups.

Thanks in advance.

Nick

Hi Nick
Looks like the curved bracket has been removed, look at the two bottom holes
on the left hand flap on your pic.

This looks interesting though

Is this some kind of manually operated flap doings going on :?: .Mine doesn't have
the cable clamp nor the arm on the flaps :? ......Dave

The connection you show I believe is linked to a divert flap in the airliner. The allows warm air to be supplied to the carb when the engine is cold.

Ok thanks guys. The bit I am missing then is this one in Green -

Does this connect to this part of the flaps?

I am guessing that this would mean a whole new flap unit?

Thanks

Nick

Bugger. Thats the best picture I have seen of them. Thanks for for that, will try to get hold of a new unit asap.

Hiya Nick,

Yes, you are missing the little loopy piece of sheet metal that attaches the rod to the right hand flapset. Matter of fact, you can see where it WAS riveted to the old flapset in your picture.

And Dave,

Your additions to my picture above are exactly how the cable connection is routed to the flapset from the air filter. This was the method VW used for regulating the preheat function in the air filter in 1970 (it was also used in 68 and 69........I think). When the engine thermostat expanded enough to open the flapsets, it also closed (via the cable) the preheat flap in the air filter. Avery nice arrangement (IMHO) but VW ditched that set-up for the 1971 production year and went with the "self-contained" wax pellet thermostat on the air filter.
