A couple of questions to do with my 1970 bay.

I would like to know if the handles for the doors/slider/tailgate/engine lid are made of brass or mazak as I would like to get mine chromed and the cost of chrome depends on the material. I also need to source a decent base if I want good chrome as mazac is a bugger to chrome well. Does anyone know?

Also, are the 'keyed' inserts inside the lock barrels the same as late bug or specific to baywindow as I would like to get a full set of working locks on one key and have a few beetle barrels lying about that I could use for spare parts.

Thanks, Matt

The wafers are different as are the springs, that said the M series late bugs differ throughout the lifetime of that series...

I am expecting a shipment of wafers and springs next month if thats of help....

If memory serves the handles have a fine coat of copper for the chrome to bond too....

I tried to rebuild barrels for my beetle - BEWARE - the wafers fly out in all directions!

They're still all over the garage floor, I decided it would be easier to find a matching steering lock & barrel set!

Good Luck.

Usefull site ....http://www.hallvw.clara.net/lockpart.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

thats a handy website, i have been planning on having a look at this on my van, as my door locks differ from every thing else.

Hiya All,

OK, it's semantics time for a guy from the other side of the pond.

Matt's referring to a material called Mazak. That term is new to me. Pray tell, just what is Mazak?

And.......can you folks over in Jolly Old get parts chromed? Chroming is growing extinct over here in the States due to environmental regulations. And where it is available it is VERY expensive.

In the states its zamak, its a zinc alloy (99.95%) and as such should take a chrome finnish after all many coaters use a zinc base coat some use a brass....

Yes we have chrome platers all over and its not awfully cheap anymore but still available to the man off the steet... :D

Can anyone else confirm the material used in the door handles please?

Still interested in knowing as the price to get the items re-chromed depends on the material, Mazak is a pig to get chromed :(

Scratch one on the underside where the castings hidden but if you can wait I have a bolloxed one that I can strip back or even hack in two...

The handles are an alloy, not sure if it's mazek or not.The chromer's i use always want to check handles before chroming just to check the condition of pitting ,etc. Due to the polishing process the handles will be slightly smaller with trying to remove the pitting if its deep.

I got a quote for £25-£30 per handle for mild pitting in the chrome surface only, if its gone into the metal handle - forget it!

Steve how much does your guy charge for chroming?
Just had 3 dash vent trims done for that late bay £20,while picking those up dropped 5 vent trims off for a mate £27.50+vat.Steering column, ignition housing, indicator housing and dash vents were done at a different place and cost £45 cash. The rest of the chroming was done at the place i'm using now, cost approx £40, ashtray front, steering column base, sliding door hinge, dash endplates, screws and washers. They've even done some self tappers for me.

Got any contact details?

Quality Chrome in hull are after 25 per handle as said if the pitting enters into the zinc then forget it, but got a few other bits I want doing ... the strip across the rear bench being 1....
