after ryan air fooked us about with our flights we cancelled them and are thinking about getting a ferry to calias and driving down to spain (over three days) to get to my bosses villa which is in cambrils just below salou
has anyone else done this if so what route did you take ?
or are we mental to consider this ?

We have booked a place on the French / Spanish border beginning of May and are driving down. We are doing Lincs > Folkestone > Tunnel > Paris > Perpignan. We're leaving Lincs @ 10am, booked on a train for 4pm and then shall tootle down overnight. It's about a 15 hour run and we're doing it in my Mk4 Golf TDi. It'll be a hoot, and I'm stoked as hell about crossing the Millau viaduct 8)

Should be a laugh and have just booked the Eurotunnel so quicker than the ferry!

We are hoping 3 days to Gerona and a week to get back!

Our maiden voyage in my current van was to South Spain from Dunkerque on our honey moon. Cost a fortune and took 4 leisurely days, but worth every penny.

Guys, I am hearing reports on the radio of British registered cars been flagged down in Spain under the pretence of a mechanical issue, then getting robbed at the road side. It seems to be on the increase so do take care.

I've driven the route in my old fiat, and was ok. Dont be a JC though, just take it steady and take stops and plan some good overnights. Better IMO is to take the ferry to the north of Spain and then do your driving. This year going in the camper via various ferrys into and out of France. Back Bilbao to Portsmouth.

Either way, make the journey part of the holiday. It shouldn't feel like a 2 day transfer!

Me and my missus drove to Ibiza in our BMW estate, one stop in south of France then another at Denia then got the Ferry to Ibiza in the Morning.. Ferry was frightening to say the least was like a tropical thunderstorm and I didn't know boats could tip so far without sinking :lol: lost my stomach a few times! Ferry back was like gliding on glass thou

We have two kids now and we are going to see our friends in south of spain in the summer, have been contemplating taking the Bay but I think we will end up hiring a T5 California as the Westy hasn't proven its self very well yet!, we felt that the drive was actually one of the best bits, love the way the landscape and climate changes as you go south.

Millau bridge was also a highlight for our journey it was less then a year old then and we didn't know anything about it until we got there which was probably for the best as my Missus gets funky about the QE2 bridge :lol:

Driving through Paris was also interesting, I don't think I'll do that again :shock:

I've mentioned this on here before, but I'm taking my Bay to Spain this summer.

I'm taking the ferry from Plymouth/Portsmouth to Santander/Bilbao - saves quite a lot of miles. I've done 400 miles in a day in my Bay before, but it's not something I'd call enjoyable.

Hearing this a lot latley on radio here too! Aparently the worst road for this is the AP7 which runs down the east side of Spain right down to the south! Seems to happen to a lot of nieve tourists, many from the uk, eastern europeans seem to be the main culprits! I use this road fairly regually, but you have to keep your guard up, dont pull over if someone indicates you have a problem with your motor etc and watch it if someone distracts you asking for directions etc! Ive never seen anything going on but have heard of people being had over :shock:
Best thing is to avoid this road if poss, use the n332 which is nicer and the road the locals use (no tolls ) but travelling thrugh rural Spain should be fine, people are great 8)
