well what can i say, the more i look at my new bus, the more botches i find!

but i have a question, i know that the van has had in its life had a different engine witha Alternator fitted, it now has a dynamo! that doesnt work! i havent had a good look at it, but i know that they both have different regulators, can any one tell me if this is the right regulator for a dynamo?

Also i cant get the belt to tighten up enough, there are no shimms fitted, so im not sure what to do now!! does any one still sell the non toothed fan belt?

thanks

Mark

mark you need to change your belt if it wont fit with no shims, if you run the engine it is likely to over heat and cook!

can you see a part number on the regulator? it would tell us alot more

Looks like the right type of regulator, however bus dynamos were upgraded to 38 amps for the 69 model year(the book again), or it could be a beetle one which was 30 amp.
the 38 amp generators had a special backing tin that sunk the generator into the fan housing more to cope with the extra length.

I think i'll invest in a new fan belt tomorrow and go from there.
I found that generator belts were very variable in size IIRC JK ones were too big & vw heritage ones were better - but dont quote me on that.

& you can get shim kits from the usual places again IIRC you should have 6 on at all times 0 the ones not used between the pulley halves should go on the outside under the pulley nut otherwise the nut & washer can bottom out on the generator shaft & causes it to wobble/eventually break.

oh now thats interesting, there are none on it at the moment, so it could be that the bolt cant tighten it up enough!!

i'll try it with some washers tomorrow, and order some shimms.

As Loxy say's theres 30 and 38 amp genny's,check on top of generator to find which one you have and then check regulator to see if it's the same.Think generator fan belt is a 905 and alternator is a 912.

In total you should have 15 shims fitted, whether you need them or not. You need whatever it takes to adjust the belt tension between the pulley halves and the rest on the outside. The issue of a toothed belt is a red herring. The toothed belt was introduced to allow the belt to run reliably over the smaller pulley size associated with alternators. It has no bearing on the tension issue. Your problem stems from the number of shims fitted.

ok thanks, i'll order the shimms then, i may have a few in my garage from my old beetle days :)

i'll have a look at the regulator too :)

thanks for all your help.
