Simple question,I hope!
My engine is out of my 1970 ex USA bus,I noticed the engine code begins with a D.
i have checked my Bentley book and there is no D listed.
I have assummed it was the original single port motor with 47bhp...now not sure.
can anyone help me with this?
cheers Paul

Found this, but not sure whether its correct though (say's its a 1200) :?:

The problem you have is the engine could have been rebuilt several times since it was first manufactured. So all the D means is what it left VW as. Short of stripping the engine and measuring the internal dimensions there is no certain way of knowing what the engine now is.

thanks guys, makes sense that the engine has been changed /played around with over the years!
Lets hope all the parts I've ordered fit!!!

1970 bay should have a B code engine.

D code engine seems to be from a beetle.

Hiya Paul,

The "D" series engine was in production longer than any other engine series Volkswagen produced. The first "D" made its appearance in the 1965 production year. The last "D" went out the door in 1980. All were 1200 single port engines developing 40 hp SAE/34 hp DIN.

It was the last 40 horse engine available in the USA market in 1965. Since it did not appear in the USA market following the 1965 production year, I'd guess that your serial number on this case (assuming the case along with the bus is from the USA) is between 8796623 and 9800000.

As has been pointed out, what you actually might have now after 40 odd years of possible/probable rebuilds is anybody's guess. And the correct OEM engine for your 1970 Bus would be a "B5" engine. That was single port 1600 developing 57 hp SAE/47 hp DIN
