Howdy all :D

Should be getting the van ready for a trip abroad - aiming for the South of France, so will be going by ferry.

So, questions

Probably aiming to go from the South of England so looking for a cheapish but quality crossing so who to use and what's the damage to the wallet!!!

Also, can you just turn up or do you have to book in advance?

Hopefully just want a crossing in one day, so no need for a cabin

Any suggestions please

We used 'LD Lines' from Portsmouth to Le Harvre last year. They were the cheapest at the time £575. That included - Van, small trailer 2 adults, 3 kids, a cabin and 1 sleep chair - return.

Need to book up as soon as you can

dover to boulogne - speedferries - £69 return ...depends when you go. Not sure if you have to pay more for a van

just booked dover dunkirque for chimay and bulli treffen 3 week stay leaving normal hours not cat and burgler time £52 return ... :D

interested in this too.

can you post weblinks with your recommendations if you have them?, i always find it hard to get the correct web address.

Just watch out if your taking a trailer because you have to turn around on the boat sometimes you cannot ,that is why no caravans...

I use ld lines because they are cheap and cheerfull ,I always take a pillow and sleeping bag and some grub on board and usually sleep on the floor somewhere.....Cabin are cheap , but the floor is fine for me....

It`s a overnight crossing 11 to 7 , I think and you will have to book at peak times...And you can also take dogs/cats as long as they have passport etc...

Brittainy ferries are good but pricey ,I have used them a couple of times...

also been Dover Calais , but LD lines are the closer....

My singlecab is in France , so if you see it , say hi from me....

:D

I use LD Lines too to travel from Brittany to England. They are definitely the cheapest departing from Normandy or Brittany.

If you are planning to go to the South of France, Le Havre is much further south than Calais, so you'll save a lot on petrol.

I travel with them at least once or twice a year, I definitely recommend them. In the summer, there also a route between Newhaven and Le Havre.

Dover - Dunquerke is almost always the cheapest via Norfolkline or Speedferries, we paid £30 last year return!

We also did Portsmouth - Bilbao, and the book price was £1100!

Shame you just missed the jan offer with speedferries (20% off). We've just booked our crossing in july dover to boulogne return £50.. You can book as a standard car, but have to put roofracks/bikeracks inside for the crossing. If your vans lowered it may scrape on the metal ramp as its quite steap!!

This year we are going Dover Calais with P&O. Our Tesco clubpoints paid for for it! So it's kinda free! :D

Going in the T4 this time and going deep south, staying in a chalet  5 of us in the little van for 2 weeks was a little cramped last year

keep this alive as we are off to france this year for sun,sea and surf so if anyine gets any deals would be good to now

I work for Norolkline from Dover and the cheapest crossing is £19 one way. This dose depend on when booked, when crossing etc.
A VW camper can book as a normal car and your best to phone to explain.

Thanks everyone for your help on this so far!
Will try a few of the companies mentioned and see which gives the best deal for the trip.

Don't want to spend more than £200 so will keep ya posted as to which deal I go for.

Does anyone know if there are other companies that are better for lowered vehicles? Is this just beacuse of the ferries used by speedferries?

Cheers.
