With there being more choice of aftermarket steering wheels for the late bay steering column - in particular this item below (currently advertised on Vzi, and stated as from a series 1 passat).

Can anybody verify that fitting a later column into an earlybay is really as easy as the following text:

Undo the two screws that hold the thin steel cover to the floor at the base of the column, lift that up and you gain access to the rubber UJ that connects it to the box. At the top prise out the hornpush, remove the wheel, unscrew the column switch/s, then remove the three bolts that hold the column support to the dash/front panel, that'll usually give you room to pull the inner column out from under the top housing. It's not rocket science.

If it is that easy, are there any disadvantages of doing so i.e. steering lock no longer works etc?

Has anybody already done/come across this mod - slammedkustom perhaps?

I have a late column going into mine but i can see some differences around the indicator housing area but i think they can be sorted easily enough. The columns are the same bolt pattern where they mate with the steering column coupling and the same length.

Interesting topic.

I'm having trouble finding a replacement steerinwheel for my crossover Singlecab and was offered a later one that looks similar but turned out it had different spline setup.

I recieved the column too but no indicator housing.. Wondering if it is possible to mount the late steeringwheel/column and if I find a correct indicatorhousing on the steeringcolumn tube without having to replace the ignitionlock housing?
