Hi,

After a lot of soul-searching (and realism - aren't wives just great at that!) we have concluded that we aren't able to continue any further with our bus, and therefore it's up for sale

To cut a long story short... It's a 71 Danbury with NO Danbury interior - apart from the original blue cushions. Very recently the bus was returned to us from the bodyshop it had been at (for just over 3 months) as they had gone into administration.

I won't beat about the bush as the bus does need a real good chunk of work - but I'm sure there are people out there itching to get this lady back on her feet again :)

You can find pictures of her via the following link:

Since getting the bus "returned" (which was a real knock-back for us, as we had hoped the bus would have been completed in time for Easter) we have re-assessed our situation and priorities - and unfortunately the bus figured lower than before.

Still, our loss will be someone elses gain :)

We've taken advice regarding it's value (as it is) and as such we'd be looking to sell for £1800 ovno.

Please pm or email me if you have any questions or would like to view the bus.

We are located in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey. About 15 minutes from M25 J11.

Thank you,

Mike, Sarah, Emily, Harry & Daisy
(and Barney & Arthur :) )

It sure is rusty!

I have a 71 danbury hardtop also, and some of the rusty areas certainly look familiar. I'd have to agree with froggy that the price is a bit high given the amount of work ahead to arrive at a solid shell. Don't get me wrong, everything has a price, I'm just not sure that's it.

That said, I've grown to love 71's due to the combo of early looks and late mechanicals, and there's no doubt that hardtops are rarer than poppers.

So... easily within the scope of a competent welder (based on the pics) but I'd estimate it'd need approx another £1300 in panels and parts to arrive at a rust free shell with spray can primer finish if you did all the work yourself.

Not the post you're hoping for I'm sure, but I can see the potential. Don't let it get carved up for the roof!

Hi guys - and thank you for the comments.

The bus does come with some new repair panels (front wheel arch, both cab floor sections, rear cargo floor section, couple or so outiggers, couple sills, some closing panels, a crossmember, top-hat section etc etc.

And if it's of any interest the registration of the bus is valued at £500.

To be honest we had no real idea of what price to advertise it at - so we asked a few knowledgeable people and went for the average figure.

To anybody who might've been put off by the price - please come and have a look, have a cuppa, and talk things over with us - we're not trying to get one over on anyone, we'd just like a reasonable sum in return for our bus :)

Thank you,

Mike

Maybe it's a bad time of year to sell it,probably more luck in a couple of months time too.

Also whats the engine, gearbox, brakes and suspension etc like?

Some requested info...

The front beam (from memory) is in good shape - no rotting to top towers. The rear spring plates appear to be ok. The shocks could be ok - but then again could probably do with replacing.

The front discs were seized on when we got it so the pads were removed so the bus could be wheeled about. The pistons in the calipers were moving freely. The rear brake lines are no longer connected, so you can assume it will need new shoes, flexi pipes - and maybe some copper pipes.

The brake master cylinder and reservoir were operating as expected (the kids used to love stepping on the brake pedal and spraying brake fluid over the driveway)

The original gearbox (removed by PO) will be included with the bus - but I can't confirm its condition. It was our intention to have it serviced/rebuilt by Cogbox.

We are considering keeping the original engine (1600 twinport). It's not seized (I've regularly turned it over by hand via the pulley or flywheel), and was rebuilt at some stage in the past as it has the "metal strip" pinned to the case over the original serial number. However, if us keeping it proves to be a deal-breaker it will more than likely be included with the bus.

I'd have thought this is a good time of year to sell - as it allows the new owner time to get in ready for the show season/summer.

It's gonna be nice and sunny this weekend. Bring some cash and a trailer (I'll supply tea/coffee & kruspy kreme's) and you can be going home with a new project

Cheers,

Mike

Mike,

Just read your post and sorry to hear the news. Good luck with the sale.

Mike

Hey Mike,

Yeah, it's not a position we expected to be in (or wanted to be in!), but **** happens I guess. Missus says it's fate. I say it's shoddy businesses that can't manage their cash-flow

Cheers,

Mike

Bump... before putting on eBay...

Might be you best bet......

Look at this one....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270205685285

I bet the seller is doing cartwheels....

Personally I would try and get it into a garage and have it sorted possibly slow time with someone reputable word of mouth is the best way....Then afterwards if you still want to sell you'll get a better return....the problem is people looking are seeing exactly what your seeing out the window, it looks bad and dissappointing but if you were to hang in there put a bit of cash into it and reap the rewards at the end..... 1800 notes, people will be looking at numerous busses for that and less or looking to import. You've got potentially a nice bus... wish you all the luck fella you after another bus by the way?

Well... Before the bus was inadvertantly returned to us it had already been in the previous bodyshop for over 6 months. So we've already done the slow-time route

Plus, we've already had to drastically change our family plans for this year because we don't have a bus - and having upset our three kids already, we do not want to disappoint them (or ourselves) again.

The £1800 start price is actually lower than what has been suggested to us (by more than a few reputable VW people and VW workshops).

I appreciate what your saying about getting the work done - but the flipside is that potential buyers will always query work that's been done, and in it's current condition it's not hiding anything :)

It's an honest bus - which after some work - will look fantastic.

Cheers,

Mike
PS: Yes - we will probably look for a replacement bus - but one thing at a time eh :)
