Is there anyway of blocking people selling until they have accumilated a certain number of posts?
There seem to be more and more people advertising to sell stuff with there very 1st post  , chances are that once they sell whatever they will never return to our spiritual home again.
I have been a member of various other forums in the past (depending on what car i was driving  ) and most now need you to have a minimum number of posts before you can advertise.
Its just an idea but 1st time for sale posters never usually post again :x :x :x :x :x :x :x

Keep the opinions coming :)

From my point of view the forum is to used by anyone for whatever they wish to take from it. Not everyone is a 'chatter' and the person that posts to sell something may become a regular user, or will just lurk and enjoy what is posted?

Id rather deal with 'bad' sellers as and when they occurr (virtually never so far :) ) than treat people as guilty until proven innocent.

Johnny, easy and I will welcome all your thoughts though. :)

I think I'd tend to lean toward what froggy said as well actually. It is certainly the case on every other forum I'm a member of, it stops people just using the forum as a market and encourages more of a community. I feel there is a bit of security in buying off regular members who are more than likely known to another EB member.
i.m.h.o.

but then with someone jumping on board selling a bus fresh to the market or some parts they've acquired, whats the problem, we still buy them, if it makes it easier to get that illusive long reach rear view or westy cargo net you've been trying to get your hands on....as you say they come on ship to sell an item then piss off, the community still exists and thrives, theonly real problem which exists in all communities is the shiesters out there out to rip you off......

yep, fair point Aaron, Its swings and round abouts!!

p.s.- Aaron, have you noticed we always seem to post after eachother - its happened more than once!! Aaron is my middle name as well - spooky :!: we must be on line at the same times

My 5p's worth is to keep it open to all,you don't have to buy off them but if they have that part you have been looking for.........

his username's araon though

clearly he's very intelligent, so it can't be a typo, and i'm dying to know what it means, but i've always been too 'scared' to ask in case it's some sort of 'blatantly obvious thing to the clever people that i'm not clever enough to have picked up on' kind of thing, but this has piqued my interest past the tipping point

so, what is the *secret of araon* :?:

(sounds like the working title of the new harry potter film)

Quite correct TC it is ARAON, irish spelling of the hebrew Aaron meaning "high mountain" or "exalted" (my mother was an Elvis fan as my old man wouldnt have it so the devious mare went for the middle name irish spelling)

follow that with Rory again a modern spelling of the irish Ruaidhri meaning "red king"

topped off with Hartley an old english name "hart clearing" or other variations proclaiming higher inteligence and wisdom and the irish version something to do with valor

so there you go my secrets out....

i say let them come and sell, like a few have said if thier selling the rare part you want and bringing it to your atention i welcome it,saves looking thru 1000s of pages over on the vzzzzzi.

I think let it be.

As with any market it's the buyers choice whom they buy from and obviously a user selling stuff on their first post should be approached more cautiously then one of the regular guys and girls that post in here often and everyone knows that. I think the community aspect is created in the other forum areas not the for sale threads.

The only thing I would say is that if it's being used by people commercially trying to make a buck then they should perhaps give something back to the running cost's of the forum or a forum members discount. Not sure how you would manage that though, perhaps they could become sponsor members similar to the way you can contribute to the running costs of VZi?

Even that could be a little contentious though as I guess a lot of the people making their living from the scene would be on here anyway as they're not in it to get rich quick, they just happen to have a business behind them and means they have cool products and services to offer that everyone is interested in hearing about anyway.

At the end of the day, if someone wants to come on here with their crate of NOS RHD 68 only steering boxes then it's for the better good of the community that they can tell us all about it whether it's their first post or their 100th just as long as they are a genuine seller.

If you needed say 30 posts to sell something then that means that a fraudulent seller is just going to clutter up the community areas with half arsed comments and smiley faces to bump up their post count prior to listing their advert so I don't think this is really a deterrent or a control and may actually lull a few more unwary buyers into a false sense of security, which is the last thing anyone here would want to happen.

Just read this and realised that it's more of a collection of statements then a reasoned coherent argument but I'm thinking about making hot chocolate which is putting speed before haste.......

'strawberry fields forever' (one half of the greatest 7" single ever released (discuss ?)) is made up of two different takes 'spliced' together... as a boy i would listen to that song over and over and over and over and i never noticed the 'join' until i was alerted to it by a passage in the incredible "complete beatles recording sessions" book (mark lewisohn (ISBN 0-681-03189-1)) which quite rightly advised the reader not to 'listen out' for it, as once you've heard it as two halves you'll never hear it as 'one' again, and this is quite true... the join that was inaudible to me as a child now sounds like a ch-ch-chak-chaka kahn stylee remix to my 'trained' ears :|

what's that got to do with the price of fish ?

well, i always used to think 'aaron' as in "what does aaron think ?" or "i wonder if aaron's going to reply to me" or somesuch until one day the penny dropped.

*araon*

how could i have not noticed that for so long

by the way...

"the boy's name michael \m(i)-chael\, is pronounced MYE-kal. it is of hebrew origin, and its meaning is "who resembles god"

*that'll do for me*

8)

Names and their esoterical sub contexts.....you were given a name with meaning or bore some relationship to your coming about, now it seems any name that some half arse z list "celeb" holds is good to pass onto your nearest and dearest for them to carry till they deed poll themselves then get some ****** up name like Mrs Battleaxe  .......

any way I think we've somewhat digressed from the main point of the thread...

I think as already mentioned its going to be difficult enough for the Mods to weed out scammers posting a given allotment of threads and wouldnt be too difficult for some thieving **** to do in order to get to your hard earned as he's likely to be doing the rounds anyway....chances are that there is some degree of connection with genuine sellers as the VW community is relatively small in the grand scheme of things....

if your going to commit big money then your surely going to ascertain their credability or meet and exchange... most deals are relatively smalls sums so you take a leap in faith if you get stung once well you'll not do it again and the word will get round pretty damn quick,....

I reckon it's fine the way it is,it doesn't bother me if someone only ever lists an item for sale and never returns,I or someone else might need it.I probably wouldn't send money to a first time poster though,I'd probably arrange to collect it or meet halfway.

One thing regarding people to pay to advertise is what would the money be for? The site fees are paid by the banner advertisers, and Id be very wary of accumulating anymore 'cash' :?

I also remember the old Total VW forum starting to charge to place ads ..... it killed the forum dead!

Fair enough. I was just figuring that band width doesn't come for free so contributions from business's may be welcome, if its covered it then that's cool.

I would love the revenue stream to be able to place back into the club, as thats what we are after all :D , money for events for club members etc would be sweet.

I have the means for advertising something similar to thesamba but i dont think we could affect it, as you say, it probably will drive traffic away.

All Advertisers are welcome to talk to me about Banner Ads as i havent received anything so far this year, but im not sure if Mike is still taking care of that :?:

There are lots of traders and non-commercial using the forums to sell and you would be surprised at the amount of traffic we get, i know i was 8).

We have one of the busiest forsale sections of any UK club i know of... VZI and SSVC probably alot busier but we are getting there thanks to the good work of the
Mags and the guys organising the EB lineups and getting the buses featured.

We would hate to regulate the forsale section by charging as you might miss out on that elusive NOS part you were looking for  ...so its status-quo at the moment :| .

If you read the forsale section guidelines and use paypal then you should be safe enough, and at least you can recoup your money if someone is scamming. If anyone is scammed directly from our forsale section we would certainly love to know as swift action will be taken  we cant take action on someone selling if the action was conducted elsewhere.

Of course all ideas are welcome on improvement to the site and Clem, Easy and myself do take them onboard.

I think it should stay as it is, theres a good chance if someone posts a for sale ad on here for something and its the right price it will sell and be of benefit to us all, I can't understand what the problem with first time posters is, we were all first time posters once including you froggy :D
