My front door keys have slowly stopped working over time. The inside catch works fine, and now I can only lock, but not unlock the drivers door with the key. Is this a simple job or should it go to the lock shop?

try lubricating the lock mech, but it might be the little spring broken in lock mech :msn4: stops it working one way if I remember right,do a search on here think theres a thread?

My money would be on the little spring inside - fiddly but simple enough....Can't remember where I got mine, heritage I suspect....Cheap and easy to fix.

Does it work OK when the door is open? If so could just be the mech that needs a lube.

Mine were like this and I put up with it for 2 years (sometimes had to get one of the kids to climb thro the tailgate to open the door from the inside)

I had a little spare time the other week and removed the internal door panels and lubricated the mechs with a bit of WD40 and all work fine now.

Graphite powder into the lock and onto the key and it will soon work loose, if it still fails after a while whip them off and a quick soak in a degreaseant dry and then graphite powder.

If they still fail then you'll need to strip em down and likely replace all the springs (still available from locksmiths or raid the office drawers of all there cabinet locks and nick the springs out of them).

A dry lube is the key though.....

Right, I will try lubrication at the weekend...
Thanks for all the replies!!

my drivers door is having a similar problem so I'm keeping an eye on this. iv noticed that if i check the door is locked it won't unlock with the key, but if i just lock it and walk away i can unlock it again with the key...

Your problem is the little spring in the lock mechanism is broken (see arrows in pics)

Mine does the same but i was told by the guy who sold me the bus thats what they do on the doors
shows what i know

cheers shaun

The syptoms described are definitely the little spring.....not a big job and very cheap to fix. I seem to remember using a skewer or cocktail stick to hook spring over. Took 20 mins of cursing, but satisfying when you can get in without going through the slider each time :)
