Hi
I think my fuel tank has got a bit of muck in it as I was having some running trouble with it the other day, so I had a look at the fuel filter underneath the van and it was totaly blocked, so I replaced it then also had to clean out the carb as some dirt managed to get in there too.

I know it's not a good idea to fit a filter in the engine bay area, so is it O.K to fit 2 filters under the van, or is there any other solution?? other than cleaning the tank out but I'll get this done over the winter.

Is there any better in-line filter I can fit other than the cheap plastic type, anyone use the glass type that can be cleaned out??

Cheers for any advice.

The little screen thats fitted to the fuel tank should take care of any particles large enough to block the carb. Having said that I've fitted a little plastic type underneath. The advantage is that you can see if fuel is present and it provides further filtering. In addition to this on og fuel pumps there is usually another screen that can be cleaned.

Where is the screen/filter fitted into the tank itself located and is it an easy job to replace??

Hi, the screen in the tank is fitted at the bottom where the fuel pipe comes out, here is a picture of when I changed mine:

You obviously have to drain the fuel out to do this, but that may help remove any sediment thats collected over the years

Cool I'm gonna give it a go then.
Where did you buy the metal elbow pipe/valve and filter from.
Cheers for your help.

O.K I removed the inline filter again as it had blocked up again after 50 miles, so I decided to take your advice and drain the tank and replace the tank filter.
When the fuel had drained out I filtered 5 ltrs back into a petrol can by pouring it through a cloth in a funnel and poured this filtered fuel back into the tank just to wash it all through a bit, this is what came out from inside the tank. I have been told by a few people it could be from some crap fuel from a supermarket petrol station ????

I'm gonna drive it for a week without the tank filter in, wash it all through again then replace the tank filter, fuel hoses and the inline filter.
Cheers for the advice cyberdyne systems it seems you were correct. :D

Wow that looks nasty! Seems like that was your problem, good idea to try to flush as much out as you can. I know old fuel can become a bit like varnish but never seen that. On a side note I went to Peppercorn this weekend and last time I had my starvation problem, this time no problems since doing the tank and filter. I wasn't probably going quite as fast so maybe not a full test with the pump working at max but here's hoping!
