Fuel Gauge problem

my current gauge is not registering the fuel qty in the tank, i imagine this is a age old problem

has anyone got a check list e.g easiest to fix to the hardest

this will make life a little easier

I had this problem a while ago, check the connections on the back of the clock

done the circuit check looks like it is the sender

lucky its a single cab so it was easy to get to, however when i took the sender out it doesn't look like the norm

the one for the year available to buy in the various vw sites is a tube with a float with just the sender wire connection but this one is a float design running on a thin wire with both a sender wire connection and what looks like a earth - is this the norm??

will the standard tube sender be ok - the fixing point look the same??
