Fuel supply pipe

Is it important to install the metal section of pipe between the tank and through engine bay or can you just run flex pipe straight through so long as you grommet it ? It would work out with less clips and less chances for leaks.

Do whatever you think is appropriate.
I've run a continuous length of rubber fuel hose with additional protection where it goes through the tinware before, but now I'm using the short section of metal pipe.

Funnily enough just this morning I've noticed that rubber pipe has been used on mine and it's a tight squeeze through the hole with no room for a grommet etc.

I'm going to be installing a short section of metal pipe just where it goes through.
