hey guys looking for some help if you can.

i replaced the gear shift coupling at the gearbox side last week as i was finding it hard getting gears.

after i changed that the gear stick wasn't selecting gears they were all out of line (if that makes sense)

i've tried to adjust the selecta plate at the base of the gear stick, i had a search on here and all i really seen was to put it in to 2nd and bolt the plate down.

i've tried this but i still can get gears properly, now when i go to 2nd it goes in to reverse, it goes right in, with no need to push the gear stick down.

any help would be greatful and sorry for the long story ;)

You need to put it into second and then move the gearstick so that the bottom of it (before the bend) is vertical. Then move the shift plate toward the near side of the van so that the stop plate is up against the gearstick. Then tighten the bolts up. Try selecting all the gears before a test drive.

If that doesn't fix it, it may be that your shift plate and/or gearstick is knackered.

Hope that helps.

Spray....i could kiss ya lol. thank you very much ;) done what you advised and done the trick

i now have gears woohooo

it a bit lets say "sticky" dropping from 3rd to 2nd, i kinda need to wiggle it in neutal then pop it in to 2nd. so going to get a new selector plate tomorrow and try that.

but thanks again for the help :)

Glad it worked for you. I think it is unlikely to be the selector plate now so I suspect that will be a waste of money.

More likely now is that some of the bushes and couplings on the shift rod running from the front to back of the van. The ones that go most are the rear gearbox coupling and the front shift rod bush. The ones in the middle are a bitch to replace unless you have a removable mid belly pan.

Changing these will also make your gear change less sloppy but don't expect it to get anything remotely like a modern car.

If you want to stop stirring soup with your gearstick get a quick shift plate. I fitted mine, stripped the front end of the underside of the gear shaft, greased it all up fitted the plate all in about 45 mins taking my sweet time in the sun. Now it 's very close to driving a modern car.

Still a bit iffy going to second from third so new bush at the back next.

Quick shift gear sticks are not all the same, although in principle they do make shifting gears quicker. What i was referring to was a small plate approx 4 inches long that screws straight in underneath the stock gearstick. Costs just a couple of pounds.
