Can I use the Morris 30 same as the motor or should it be something different?

(Would look it up but I've lost my Haynes manual  )

Thanks,

Halfords Gear Oil EP 80W-90 Hypoid Light

^^^^ Is that the one? I'll nip out and pick it up lunchtime if so...

you can use it but any 'gearbox oil' should do doesnt have to be specifically that, its what i use.

Just dont use Morrisons 30 weight, or changing gear will be like stirring old porridge thats been sitting for a week

No worries, thanks Johnny.

Make sure it is GL4 rated, and NOT GL5. GL5 will eat your synchro rings. GL4 is getting harder to find.

I'm about to change the oil in my gearbox for the first time - may be 30 years old for all I know!
Is there any way to 'rinse' the old stuff out, or just drain and refill....?

Just drain and refill. Make sure you can get the fill plug out before you drain down otherwise you end up with an empty gearbox and no way to re-fill it.

Good point!
On that note, bearing in mind neither fill or empty plug have been moved for many many years - say there is a problem, I guess I can just empty and re-fill with the correct amount 'through the same hole' - the gearbox is currently out of the van, so this is physicaly possible....

Theoretically yes. But, what if you over fill the gearbox? The 3.5 litres quoted in the book is for a dry box, yours isn't. So I suspect that as you cannot drain every last drop you will use less than 3.5 litres. Also I would wait until the box is back in the van and everything is fitted so that the van and the gearbox will be sitting at the correct attitude to get the level right.

What are you using to top the oil up with?
When i changed my gearbox oil the only thing i had that would work was a new 500ml Oil can, have you ever tried to pump 3.5'ish Litres through one of these with THUMB power

When we do the Caterham we just use a piece of hose from the squeezy oil container up into the filling hole, and squeeze!
Halfords do the GL4 stuff....
