Hi,

hopefully someone can help me out,

I recently had a alternator fitted by a garage,
all seemed fine and ran ok until last night, when my 'gen' light came on!

after poking around i noticed that the external regulator was still in place, i have been told this is incorrect
The alternator has a cable running from B+ to battery and green/black from D+ to the regualtor.

I also noticed a relay attached, could this have any relevance?

the battery is not recieving any charge from the alternator (i guess that obious as the light on!)

the battery positive terminat has, starting cable, red cable (from alternator) and a brown cable attached,
sorry if this is mighty confusing!

im no expert and i cant fix ya problem but here is wot i know. there are 2 types of alt, the 1st has a built in regulator so needs no external one, the 2nd needs an external reg but you cant use the one a dynamo uses if you have upgraded from a dynamo (like i did in the distant past). the dash light must work for the alt to charge batt but yours obviously does as it came on. if you put a multimeter on the alt terminal is there any charge coming out?
you need to establish
wot sort or alt it is i.e does it need external reg (if so is the reg knackered)
wot is the relay for
could the alt knackered (was it made by shitwang industries) or is there a loose wire

if the alt is putting out a charge and your batt is not getting it i had a problem on my van where the pos term on batt to the pos clamp just lost continuity, clean up clamp and term on batt with sandpaper or file

hope this helps a tiny bit

It does have a built in regulator, and is unforunately some spurious rebuilt eastern crap!

if i am to measure output of alternator, do i just use B+ and d+ to measure the voltage output?

ground meter to neg on vehicle then go on b+ on alt but your prob could be running an external reg along with an alt with a built in reg. ask place where it was done or find a friendly auto-electrician who's brains you can pick. i work with an ex auto electrician and have left a message on his voice mail about your prob hopefully he will get back to me today. pm your number just incase (he is into aircooled aswell) and i will see if he can talk to you about it nick

Hmmmm, a weird one!

Just been home to check voltage and to my suprise, its all working ok? weird!

Getting 14.3V back to the battery!

Im going to check all of the wiring back from the regulator tonight,

The garage seem to know what they are on about, but i think the mechanic messed up!

If the mechanic fitted a external regulator to an internal regulated alternator then he is a muppet! Tell him to wire it in correctly - without the regulator - and if he doesn't know how then show him a wiring diagram. And don't pay him a penny more!!!
